  • Bio

These guys launched themselves into the Australian music scene with the punchy ‘We Don’t Walk’; a song that captured the playfulness and self-assured outlook of youth and quickly attracted the attention of community radio - in particular FBI and Triple J. Soon after, the song became further recognised as the backdrop to the popular ‘Unwired Australia’ ad as well as being featured on ‘Underbelly’. .... Since then The Paper Scissors have delivered music drawing on everything from soul to pop, punk and indie, that channel a feeling of immediacy delivered through a punchy guitar and drum sound with Jai’s anguished, edgy vocals. .... While their recorded repertoire is dynamic, their consistently high-voltage live performance remains at the epicentre of The Paper Scissors identity. The band have frequently toured as a headliner as well as playing festivals including Falls, Playground Weekender and Southbound where their energetic stage show and audience participation are a common thread. .... With the delivery of their new single ‘Lung Sum’, it’s clear that the guys have come of age, shedding themselves of the novelty of youth and exploring slightly more serious subject matter. ‘Lung Sum’ is less introspective than their previous work and walks the line between being darkly emotive while remaining fun and energetic. .... 'Lung Sum' was launched at the 2010 One Movement for Music Festival in Perth, followed by a national tour and an announcement of a full-length player due out early 2011! Whether you have been on board from the beginning or are just joining the ride now, Lung Sum is just a glimpse of a whole new chapter of tasty delights The Paper Scissors have planned! .... Speaking of tasty, check out the tour blog the guys have started, detailing the wonderful and pitiful cuisines sampled on the road. .... QUOTES ('LUNG SUM'):.... .."ANOTHER killer song by The Paper Scissors that we've added straight to our playlist. When you consistently write songs this good, quotes like this from guys like me are totally redundant.".. ....Dan Zilber, Music Director, FBI Radio.. .... ..“Between the kick-ass drumming, hooky bassline and Jai's idiosyncratic vocal, ‘Lung Sum’ is sure to slide into your mind and never worm its way out.” .... ..Stav, Bluejuice.. .... .."‘Lung Sum' is a pulsating anthem that could see them follow fellow Australians The Temper Trap onto wider success." ......Faded Glamour, UK...... .."The Paper Scissors reinforce why it’s great to be Australian. Exceptional song-writing quality and one of the most distinct vocals in Australia, possibly the world.".. ....White Boy on the Dance Floor, Aus...... .."I’ve been in kind of a musical rut lately. That was until my ears had a listen to The Paper Scissors from Sydney. My first introduction to them was the video for ‘Lung Sum’… pretty fatalistic lyrics, but somehow I find comfort in them like I do with Morrissey’s self-loathing words. The idiosyncratic way Jai Pyne sings reminds me of the B52s‘ Fred Schneider and even R.E.M.‘s Michael Stipe a bit. There’s something wonderfully catchy about the lyrics and the drums, then the guitars when the vocals cut out.".. ....There Goes the Fear, UK...... .."Now they’re back with a revised lineup, their second album, In Loving Memory and a new single Lung Sum which well and truly leaves any gimmicks behind. Lush, dark and edgy, Lung Sum keeps the energy of the boys’ songwriting but has a new intensity reminiscent of Frightened Rabbit or Kings of Leon circa 2007 and word is that the rest of the new material seen so far at The Paper Scissors live shows is in the same vein"......Radar Radio...... ........
