About me:
The Poetry Brothel is the first event of its kind to seduce New York City. A new and dreamlike twist on a poetry reading, The Poetry Brothel is foremost interested in the presentation of excellent, original literature. However, it is also an interactive performance art event based on the concept of a brothel. The "Madame" presents a rotating cast of this city's finest poets (both men and women) engaged in a night of literary debauchery and private poetry readings. Here's how it works: The poets play "whores," visitors play "johns" (and are also encouraged to attend incognito!) but instead of physical intimacy, the poets offer the intimacy of their poetry by giving private, one-on-one readings in curtained-off areas. For a small fee, all of the resident "whores" are available for private readings at any time during the event. Of course, every good brothel needs a furtive "front" or cover business; ours is part saloon and part salon, offering a full bar, blackjack table (played for prizes), tarot card readings, live painting, and live music, with newly integrated performances and installations from our poets, performers, and artists each month. Each night "The Madame" will also introduce "the new girl," a surprise featured reader who will punctuate the evening with a few special public performances.
The next Poetry Brothel will be held on Friday, May 1st, 9pm to 2am at Papa B Studios at 907 Broadway in Brooklyn! $15 gets you in with a free St. George Absinthe cocktail and a free private private poetry reading with your very own poetry whore!
You can join The Poetry Brothel mailing list and receive up-to-date information about upcoming performances by e-mailing

Who I'd like to meet:
Lovers, lusters, gypsies, poets, seductresses of the night; dreamers, voyeurs, a chanteuse extaordinaire; hedonists, exhibitionists, artists who have not misplaced their souls; lost souls, witches, goblins, ghosts and gamblers; vagrants, vandals, wandering musicians, a suit and tie, a lace ruffle, a cuban cigar, a french inhale; the dodgy and debonair, the classy and covert, performers of any sort, oh, and that little taste of the Orphic in us all.
The Poetry Brothel now offers writing workshops. We would love to hear from our future students! See our blog and/or website for details.

HE BLEEDS
Love is like no-one else you ever met.
His face obscured like a diamond of light behind white shadows.
You laugh and sob in his presence, unable to comprehend his majestic beauty.
He takes your hand and leads you through worlds of immeasurable splendour, devastating loss, ravishing beauty and unspeakable pain.
When darkness surrounds, you lose all sight of him and scream out in terror like a child rejected by it's parent.
But in time you realise that he has let go of your hand because he now carries you in his arms.
He stands in the gap between you and everything that would harm you.
He negotiates for you, he fights on your behalf.
He absorbs all pain, darkness, heartache, fear, loss, grief, sadness, evil, torture and death.
He roars like a lion and bleats like a lamb.
He lives in serenity, creates courage and is the foundation of all wisdom.
He is the starving child in Africa, the destroyed family of Iraq. He is the bedraggled alcoholic on the street corner. He is the married executive on his way to the whore house. The terrified mother with a dying child. He is the baby killed at the hands of those who should have protected him and also the parents who did that.
He is black, white, light and dark. He stands outside of time and towers over everything else the universe has ever known.
But in all strength, he is weak and utterly defenceless. He steps in front of you. He cries.
He reaches out his arms, and enveloping your soul into his heart,
He drops his head and he dies.
