In our ongoing attempt to catalogue the best of things in London, it would be remiss of us not to mention the Urban75 shindigs down in Brixton. They've been running for a fair while now. In fact much longer than we've spent wondering where the word shindig actually comes from, probably.
First off, its free. Free, yet good things are always good. This is obvious we know, but it's a good indication that it's done for the sheer love of it. Based mainly in Brixton (although they do sometimes do a night in Crystal Palace). These events are alternative without being sneeringly hip in skinny jeans and haircut from page 17 of New Look magazine, 1984, way. It is very much related to the site Urban75.com.
Having been to one last weekend at the Prince Albert in Brixton. We can vouch for it being like someone's friendly house party, which they've opened up for the general public. Featuring a combination of bands, deejays, films, comedians. This time it had bands, of which we caught 2. The most memorable were an entertaining Ramones cover band. Now this Londonista isn't generally a fan of cover bands, but even though they looked like the Ramones shrunk after an especially hot wash, they were entertaining, and got the crowd furiously pogoing. The deejays? well only eclectic can cover a music policy which ranges from old school reggae, to S-Club 7. In the past they've put on people like Rob Newman, Jim Bob from Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, Tv Smith from The Adverts, Tom Robinson. We'll stop now, as lists can get dull. But you can see that actually they could charge a fiver or so and get away with it. But they don't. Good on 'em we say.
Entertaining, friendly, and free. What more do you actually want from a night out? * Oliver Gili * www.londonist.com
Its not the swankiest place in town but neither is Brixton and thats why I like it!
Not much to look at but comfortable and great relaxed atmosphere.
The beer garden out the back is arranged in a kooky way but heated, so as a smoker it was really pleasant to sit out there the other night(even though it is Feb). Bar staff are friendly and quick even when its busy. Great place to escape from the craziness, even if its an odd place in itself.
Thumbs up :-) * KittyP - 21 Feb 2008 * www.beerintheevening.com
Hunker down and get ready for a long night of boozing because the Prince Albert is the most comfortable pub in Brixton. Free of pretensions and poseurs it is a nice place just to spend a weekday evening, shoot some pool, drink some beer and hang out with the lads or for a sunny Sunday sitting out in the garden (probably under one of the heaters if last year is anything to go by). The bar staff are great, they'll turn the TV over to the channel you want or take on music requests and are generally really great at their jobs. I'd give Prince Albert a five out of five, but they probably already know that I'm in so much! *

Really relaxed pub. Good Guinness. Pat the landlady is a star even tho she nearly beat me with a stick one night I fell asleep in the toilets and woke up after closing time! Best pub in Brixton by a long way. * emmadelahunt - 23 Mar 2008 * www.beerintheevening.com
Unquestionably, the finest pub in Brixton! Attracting a mixed and very friendly crowd, the Albert enjoys a fierce loyalty from its patrons who enjoy the cheap beer, extended hours, extremely eclectic music selection and the legacy of its legendary landlady, Pat Burke (who sadly passed away in May, 2002). Located next door to the 414 Club, this is the best place for a pre-club drink or just a pub night out. We recommend it. Look out for their poetry slamdowns, excellent quiz nights and, fo course, our massive free live music nights. * www.urban75.org
Our suspicions are usually raised when a pub decides to opt for 'wacky' décor - its smacks of trying too hard. In the case of the Prince Albert, though, it pays not to judge too quickly. After recovering from the lurid exterior, its happily more sober inside - albeit still bright and breezy, but pretty relaxed and with a good selection of tunes playing. The back garden is great, too - covered almost entirely in a lush canopy of trees (well, in the Summer anyway). Like other pubs in Brixton, the mix of people is certainly varied, reflecting the area - old Jamaican men, young clubber types, geezers and couples all share the space with apparent ease. Essentially its pretty close to what many normal pubs were in the 1990s before the gastro 'revolution' and we're glad of that - it just adds to the rich diversity of drinking establishments you can find in Brixton. * redcat - 18/12/2006 * www.fancyapint.com
I used to go here when I was a student and it was a dive, but with a relaxed atmosphere. Went back the other night for the first time in a few years - it's been smartened up, the staff are very friendly and there's a decent range of beers.

Does what is says on the tin. Chilled out and comfortable. Few undesirables in and the smelliest toilets in the world! * RobBlake - 9 Apr 2008 * www.beerintheevening.com
A local favourite that still stubbornly remains a simple pub, without succumbing to standard London bar makeover. Good atmosphere with plenty of places to sit down inside plus a tiny outside 'beer garden', which is nice in the summer. * www.wikitravel.org
