Influences
The ebb and flow of personal relationships, the unfortunate invinciblility of political wrongdoing and graft, the post-coital cigarette, conversations overheard on the street and subway, The NY Mets, the poetry of both Billy Collins AND Jay-Z, days off, the thoughts that skip across the mind pond as you stare into a BBQ pit while smoking a cigar, Miss Nicolai: 8th grade science teacher, the rail at the finish line at Monmouth Park, the paintings of Joan Mitchell AND Norman Rockwell, the films of Werner Herzog, the 1993 WTC Bombing, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the speed in which children become adults, the songs and spirit of Joe Strummer, Negroni's, the scent of any beach at any time, the fiction of Don DeLillo, newspaper ink on fingertips, Bob Dylan's "Isis", the morning after a blizzard, the act of shoveling it, buying records IN a record store, for that matter, buying books IN a bookstore, the speed in which adults become old, the dissapointment over the miscalculation of ones "cut of gib", the music of Ronnie Lane & The Faces, the NY State Lottery, tuna fish sandwiches and new strings on an old guitar. Hi people, thanks for visiting and please be sure to CHECK THE BLOG for more up to the minute details and happenings!!! THE PROBLEMS are a NYC based band now working on their second full-length independent CD release, due out in 2008. With the success of their self-titled debut album behind them, Frank Caiafa and company are convinced this compelling collection of new material will exceed all expectations.
THE PROBLEMS perform an infectious blend of urban and alternative roots-rock, citing alternative rock/country, and guitar based pop as influences - with perhaps a bit of punk. Singer/songwriter Caiafa explains; "We hate being pigeon-holed into one category. Because of this bands ability to play whatever the songs demand, the songs take on a life of their own."
Currently in the studio with new members Kate Kilbane (bass, vocals) and Eddy Goldberg (banjo, harmonica and vocals), together with founding members Frank Caiafa (guitar, vocals) and Barbara Corless (drums, vocals), THE PROBLEMS are forging a classic sound which is both current and timeless.
When THE PROBLEMS originally began playing in and around N.Y.C., a fortuitous meeting with Smithereens front man Pat Dinizio led to an invite on his "Living Room Tour". This proved to be a remarkable success, and soon THE PROBLEMS were recording their full-length debut album (available at CDBaby.com & iTunes). Enthusiastically received by critics and fans alike, it has been playing across the U.S. and around the world, including National Public Radio's "All Songs Considered" and on WAXQ 104.3 New York's new music show "Out of the Box". Various cuts can also be heard in rotation on XM satellite radio's "Unsigned" channel and Pandora.com, among others.
In September 2004, Billboard magazine awarded "This Town" an Honorable Mention in their "World Song Contest" Rock/Alternative Rock category. Songs from "The Problems" have been featured in film such as the award winning independents, "The Poker Game" and renowned artist Lonnie Hanzon's documentary "Working the Magic." THE PROBLEMS also provided the central theme song ("Ran") for the soon to be released, "The Dying Light". In June of 2006, Frank was a guest on the long-running local television show, "The New Yorkers." The segment included an extended interview and solo live performance of the new song, "Close." In September, THE PROBLEMS were predominately featured on NBC's "Today" show. Their CD was showcased and the song "The Lottery", was included in a segment. October once again found THE PROBLEMS delving into the world of film, as Frank and Kate collaborated on the new song, "Schoolyard Steps" (You can hear it on this page). Written for the new short film "The Truth Of Fiction", (Winner!-Best Short-NY International Independent Film & Video Festival) Frank also makes his return to the big screen, acting in a cameo role (Don't blink or you may miss him)!
THE PROBLEMS are also featured on GarageBand.com which chose "This Town" to be their 'Americana' "Track of the Day" for March 15th, 2007.
'The Ultimate Band List' (ubl.com) has chosen THE PROBLEMS to be a featured artist for October/November 2007 Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4
Wow, "Schoolyard Steps" sounds like a cross between Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. All you need are some lush string arrangements. Thanks for the add, now don't be strangers.
