PLEASE SEE SLIDER POSTED ABOVE FOR THE NEW 2008 CALENDAR BENEFITTING PDE RESEARCH
I am very excited to have worked on this project and am grateful to all who have shared their story and pictures with me. This calendar features a pug every month who has died of Pug Dog Encephalitis and shares a message from their family to their beloved pug along with their birthdate and date they passed on. I hope to be able to do this again in 2009 and will soon begin to take submissions for the 2009 calendar with the last date of submission being November 1, 2009 that way I can have it printed and ready to go November 30th.
I scanned each image individually and can say that the actual calendar looks better in person. I am including a PDE Fact Sheet and a fridge magnet with each calendar. All profits made in selling this calendar will go to Texas A&M for PDe Research. This calendar was very expensive to make and so I only made a limited number of calendars for 2008 since it was put out in January. If you are interested in ordering the calendar with the fact sheet and magnet thrown in, please email me if you have any questions or send a $20.00 or money order check made out to:

Little Forgotten Friends Rescue
There is a wonderful rescue in Middletown, NY named Little Fotgotten Friends Rescue. My friend Maria LaRocca is an incredible person, she is the only local hospice I know of in the state of New York, she has an incredible heart and never says to to a pug in need. Maria also takes in several small dogs for rescue and hospice purposes. Please take some time to look at her website and see all she does. Maria can always use your donations as she always has a minimum of 35 dogs in her home at one time.

URGENT MESSAGE TO THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY HAVE A PUG WITH SYMPTOMS OF PDE (PUG DOG ENCEPHALITIS)
UPDATED DECEMBER 9, 2007
Many people have contacted me over the course of a year with questions about how to handle a pug with Pug Dog Encephalitis or what to do with a pug who they suspect may have symptoms of PDE. This message is to all of them and all of you who may have a sick pug:
First of all it is very important for you to get medical attention for
your pug, I highly recommend contacting "Center for Specialized Veterinary
Care" which is in Westbury Long Island with Dr. Richard Indieri the Head of
the Neurology Dept, if you are in the New York area. You should take your
pug there as soon as possible, they will also allow you to stay the night there
with your pug if needed. Keep your pug as comfortable as possible.
Per Dr. Greer:
The following is a list of diseases that display the same symptoms as PDE.
All except PDE and GME are curable!!
An educated vet would check to see if your pug has either one of them
before diagnosing your pug with PDE, if not, then please do not be shy, educate
your vet:
The following first group of diseases can be checked by running titers on the blood or by direct analysis. Have your pug checked for other causes of encephalitis such as:
Erlichia
Lyme disease
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Toxoplasmosis
Liver shunt (this should be tested if your Pug is 2 years old, but not necessary if your Pug is 4 years old)
2nd set of diseases or causes of symptoms:
Epilepsy
Stroke
Inner Ear Problems
GME (granulomatous meningioencephalomyelitisa)
Lastly, PDE (Pug Dog Encephalitis)
I urge you to be prepared to make sure that your vet has explored every option or symptom out there before you or he makes the determination that your pug may have PDE. A friend of mine just went through this recently and luckily found out that her pug had suffered a mild stroke. He is now almost 100% recovered. Keep in mind that PDE afflicts pugs between the age of 19 months to seven years and most often of those in the three year old age group. If your pug is older than 7, he/she more than likely is suffereing from one of the diseases mentioned above.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE FIRST THING YOU SHOUL DO IF YOUR PUG PASSES FROM HAVING SYMPTOMS OF PDE.
WE SO DESPERATELY NEED EACH OF YOU TO CONSIDER PLACING YOUR PUG IN OUR PROGRAM!
Please know that PDE cannot be diagnosed accurately until after your
pug passes on. A necropsy (autopsy) must be done to fully diagnose PDE.
I respectfully request that you think about having your pug participate
in the research study that is being conducted at Texas A&M. Participation
is free and I am here to guide you through all the steps necessary. The first
thing you must do is contact your vet and ask that they refrigerate the
remains of your pug until we can help guide you through the shipping process. We can
help you with the process of making sure your pug is wrapped properly
and will pay for all shipping costs from a reputable carrier.
Saying goodbye is hard, especially knowing your baby is being shipped across the country, but please have peace in your heart knowing that this is just his outer shell,
his/her beautiful spirit is now watching over with you and your memories of
him/her are the most precious thing you now have to hold on to, as well as his/her
ashes, Dr. Greer's team will make sure your baby's ashes will be with you once the
samples are taken.
Participation is especially important RIGHT NOW as Dr. Greer is working
hard on a detailed gene screen and needs participants in the study in order
to do necropsies and gather samples.
If we can get this gene screen done with enough participants, a genetic test for PDE will be the next- step-and-best for helping our Pugs.
Please be aware that having your pug participate in the study is really
the only way we can continue to work towards finding a cure. As I have
stated above, so many of you have contacted me, but there has not been any
follow up, so I have no clue whether or not your pug has passed on or if he is
doing well. Please continue to read all of the information below on the
process of participation.
I cannot stress how important the safety of your pug is to Dr. Greer, she has assured me that she is very involved in the process of the research and does what she can to make sure that your pug's remains are handled with the utmost respect and dignity. I myself have been to Dr. Greer's lab in Texas and know that your pug's safety is very important to her and it is her #1 concern.
Samples, will be taken, your pug will then be cremated and returned to you at no cost to you. You and your pug can give other pugs and their owners the greatest gift of all, the opportunity for research to continue to be conducted, a step towards finding a cure.
Also, I have extended the date for the PDE calendar I am working on as
I have been extremely ill lately and I am waiting to hear back from those
of you who may need to add your pug to the list. Your pug can be memorialized
in this wonderful little calendar I am working on at no cost to you, all
proceeds will go to PDE Research at Texas A&M.
Please feel free to email me should you have any questions of concerns
at ThePugHotel@aol.com.
SUPPORT THE PUGWEISER FUND FOR PDE RESEARCH
(PUG DOG ENCEPHALITIS)
On April 1, 2007, a friend of mine lost her pug (Pugweiser)to PDE. I quickly decided that I wanted to get involved in supporting those who were doing research on Pug Dog Encephalitis and decided to become a fundraiser for this cause.
This is a terrible disease that is killing many pugs each year. This horrible disease affects pugs between the age 6 months and 7 years. There is no known cure or cause. Because PDE is a breed specific disease, only affecting pugs, there is not much funding or support for those doing research. Dr Kimberly Greer is one of two people doing research for PDE, she is extremely busy but does do her best at updating her website when she can. I have attached a link here so you can see what PDE is all about....
Dr. Greer is going strong on research. She is very friendly and is also a pug mommy of 4, has served on Pug Rescue committees and also lost one of her pugs at a very young age, so she understands how devastating it is to lose a beloved pug. I encourage you to contact her should you lose your dog to PDE or suspect that your pug may have PDE. Dr. Greer also suggests that everyone look at The Pug Dog Club of America's website for information that is updated more frequently on PDE, click below.
DONATIONS
Donations for the Pugweiser Fund should be mailed as follows:
Make check out TO: Texas A&M VTPB
In the Memo section write: Fund For PDE Research -Pugweiser
Address to mail check:
Texas A&M University
ATTN: Dr. K Greer

WHAT HAPPENS WITH YOUR DONATION?
Your donation allows Dr. Greer continue her research to find a cure for PDE and allows her to provide the the following:
Collect samples from deceased pugs including the autopsy/necropsy which can be very costly in itself. Pay for the transport of all pugs coming into the lab, usually via DHL (with ice packaging). Pay for the cremation of the deceased pug and shipping of the remains back to the rightful owner. Great care is taken to ensure that every owner's pug is handled with the utmost care and love and that each pug is transported back home in a safe and loving manner. Comprehensive reports are also sent back to each owner along with the cremated remains. Samples of all pugs related to those who have passed on due to PDE are also collected with comprehensive reports that are sent back to their pug moms and/or pug dads. Dr. Greer has a staff that is dedicated to this project and they all take a great deal of care to make sure that all pugs are handled with love, respect and dignity.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME AND MY PUGS - PICTURES AND STORY BELOW
I currently live in Beacon, New York with my husband Craig and my 7 pugs. I am an animal activist and have some experience in working with rescues and rescue organizations. I also have some experience in working with pugs who have needed rehabilitation and developed this page to inform people about our doggy daycare, the care of rescues, especially pugs and to inform the public about a terrible disease calle PDE (Pug Dog Encephalitis).
I am also devoting this page to all who need information on how to rescue, train and keep a pug or any other dog healthy. I have 7 pugs (4 who have all come through rescue).
If you have rescued a pug or any other breed, please feel free to write me for any advice. I do have some experience with pulling dogs out of shelters and getting them healthy again, especially those with food allergies which can lead to many other ilnesses.
Please stay tuned, as this page is updated weekly.
PEANUT SUPPORTS THE PUGWEISER FUND FOR PDE RESEARCH
(PUG DOG ENCEPHALITIS)
TRICKS BY PEANUT THE MAGNIFICENT PUG!
(appeared on "PetStar" with Mario Lopez)
Disclaimer: Peanut came to our family with about 20 tricks under his belt, we do not have a full history on him and do not know the past training methods, but we can assure you that Peanut lives quite a comfortable life where he takes as many naps as possible, long walks before practicing his tricks and he is never starved or we never mistreat him when he is learning a new trick. He is fed a great diet and the only thing we do is take him for a long walk, give him time to rest and drink lots of water and that gets him very focused. We never punish, hit, yell or mistreat Peanut in order to learn a trick, if he wants to learn it then we proceed, if he does not like it, we move on or let him rest.
Peanut is a Pug for hire for any dog safe event and his earnings go to PDE Research, because Peanut does care about finding a cure for PDE!
