The term „Garage Rock“ gets tossed around pretty liberally these days.
In the last 5 years (a little after Chuckamuck where already plucking Chuck Berry covers in a damp cellar with stolen electricity as 13 year-olds), Garage Rock has retrogressed from a nerdy distant relative of punk in 2002, to being found as the feature of music-magazine cd compilations; to inspiring catwalk couture; to being butchered by rich mommies boys with expensive amps and pedals to make them sound cheap; and finally, now, the intolerable depths of fastfood advertising and being represented in soundless billboard advertising.
Chuckamuck wont give a fuck about this opening statement, but I do. Cuz I see these young scamps as the syrum to this poison, the antithesis of this culture and the bullet in the cop that is punk langour and homogeneity that should have died out in the 80s.
Chuckamuck ARE garage rock. They do bad at school.
Like The Ramones, they all play punk individually for different reasons. But, like The Penetrators, they keep writing better and better tunes cuz they want to increase their chances of getting some kisses after a show.
Chuckamuck have more in common with the mythical Keggs, getting kicked out of school concerts for barely being able to keep an instrument tuned, then any other musicians swooning around in leather jackets. They are fucking smartass misfits, Ne’er-do-wells and reprobates. They fucked me over once in a concert I organised for them cuz the drummer got arrested for public drunkeness before the gig and by the time he was released they had to be the headliners for the night.
They sound better out of tune, drunk and wild, so if you are booking them, feed ‚em a bunch of alcohol before they play. In fact, feed them anything you can cuz they are a bunch of poor motherfuckers. But just like Handsome Dick Manitoba preached us, "I dont have to be here…… this is just a hobby for me", and nothing could be more in touch with the essence of Chuckamuck:
They are just as happy deafening neighbours in their basement as they are playing in front of dancing young girls – you’re just lucky they do venture out, cuz this is still a hobby for them.
