Songs about Glasgow that sound like they're about America; songs about girls who did us wrong/proud; songs about The Doublet, and yes, songs about wanting to be Merle Haggard. The songs will no doubt become significantly better when Jode does in fact become Merle...
In a cavernous Glasgow cathedral many years ago a drunken-hearted boy lay lamenting the badness of girls and goodness of whiskey along with the only men who understood him; Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Hank Williams. Thus Skeleton Bob was born.
Currently enjoying life as an oltime melody-driven three-piece, Skeleton Bob can often be found peddling their wares around Glasgows best live music venues. The trio comprising drummer Eilidh Rodgers, bassist Richie Henderson and singer/guitarist Jody Henderson, hope to soothe your trodden heart with a filthy-sweet sound thats been likened to Uncle Tupelo, The Handsome Family, Evan Dando, and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
"You can actually picture the three of them chewing their baccy and swinging in their wicker rocking chairs, softly purring their throaty musings with banjo and pedal steel round the ole saloon." - The Skinny
"Wistful country-tinged banjo-coustica with mouth organ and flat caps, singing of local heroes and regulars at The Doublet [the West End's best bar]. When they sing about being on a westbound train through dusty towns, and you realise it's probably Partick, Anniesland, Dalmuir... there's a splendid shiver down the spine. This is not provincialism, it's beautiful realism. Neatly worded, and full of nice musical surprises, like the aforementioned banjo kicking in, this is an organic treat, as completely satisfying as a Greggs pasty with proper ingredients." - 13th Note Preview.
The music part: Peter Nicholson (cello - The One Ensemble), RM Hubbert (guitar), Jer Reid (guitar), Howie Reeve (bass - Tattie Toes), Marion Kenny (guxheng; chinese harp and flutes), Lucy Duncombe (voice - Trees)
I haven't been to a Skeleton Bob gig for nearly a year! That sucks! Please play a gig on either the 7th or 9th of November. In fact, if it could be a "Cream of Glasgow" all-dayer also featuring Lucky Luke, Nalle, Foxface, Tattie Toes, Dananananaykroyd, Gay Against You and Triple School (and probably many others that I've forgotten), that would be even better! Thanks, Katesby x
Heh. I don't really feel embedded enough in the London "scene" to start organising gigs etc just yet, but maybe I should try to sell you guys to some of the people I know who do that kind of thing.. And you're certainly welcome to crash at mine anytime, for sure. Re: the photo, my full stage name is Late Katesby.. or Kate Laceby.
I'm coming to the 'gow this weekend for NPL and the Stirling Plan B yomp (you should come!) so look out for me if you're out and about.
Thank you so much for playing a brilliant set last night and helping us to raise lots for Oxfam. Bruce Springsteen had a tough act to follow. Lots of love, Mister Tramp
Oh yeah - and Tougher Than The Rest is my favourite ever Springsteen song and your version is SWELL!! Goosebumps ensued. No mean feat. My new profile track :o)
I just wanted to drop a quick line to let you know just how much I enjoyed your set at Beardstock on Saturday! :o) Maybe you might like to come play a song at FFF sometime? x
