Allan Lane’s Hard Knocks Motorcycle Entertainment presents The School of Hard Knocks Amateur Custom Biker Build Off. This build off is specifically for the non-professional builder, including everyone from “Joe Wrench” to “Bike Shop USA”. For the sake of this competition, the term amateur is defined as anyone/shop/team that has not received any national press/recognition in any media formats for the art of building custom bikes.
All interested builders must complete an application to be considered a competitor. This application process will confirm that the builder and his/her team are completely composed of amateurs as defined by the terms of the competition. Upon application approval, competitors will be given the rule book and be introduced to the School of Hard Knocks round table of pro builders that will serve as the competition judges. There will be ten judges that judge ten categories, determining the winner of the competition.
The builders will be given 5 months to complete their projects, a spending limit of no more than $10,000, and must adhere to strict guidelines and rules such as: Builders will be subject to weekly progress reports, be given a list of outsourceable services, the completed projects must be fully operable and will be subject to a minimal field test… to list only a few.
Builders can select to compete in one of three classes: Sportbike, Cruiser and Specialty. Completed projects will be judged in the following categories: Chrome, Paint, Fairing/Body Modification, Frame Modification, Accessories, Wheels, Function, Creativity, Level of Difficulty and Execution.
The official judging will occur at the first annual School of Hard Knocks Custom Bike Show and Expo to be held at the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Preliminary prizes for the winner will include national media exposure, tool and equipment packages valued at over $5000.00 and bragging rights.
