The Seldon Plan is a Baltimore-based band that plays “tuneful-wistful rock...” (The Washington Post). The band’s live performance schedule has been steady throughout the northeast US over the past couple of years as they supported their first full-length record Making Circles – including shows with The Stills, Matt Pond PA, Now It’s Overhead, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness, Explosions in the Sky, and Jet By Day. They have just released a new record and already it is humbly gaining the confidence of indie-pop lovers all around.
The new record by The Seldon Plan, titled The Collective Now, is an expansive exploration of the band’s on-again-off-again relationship with pop music. The Collective Now was originally meant to be a dance-pop record with a healthy reverence to early 80’s college radio. However, The Collective Now evolved into what the band suggests is their own mature, widely influenced brand of modern indie pop.
What results is an interesting essay on the tension a band might feel between simplicity, accessibility and artistic expression. Listeners might hear The Collective Now as a diverse intersection between Maritime, The Little Ones, Band of Horses, Earlimart and The Swirlies. No matter what you hear, you are sure to enjoy this sophomore effort from The Seldon Plan.
We are excited to announce the release of the re-mastered and re-sequenced version of The Seldon Plan's The Collective Now by The Beechfields Record Label. The new record made a national debut on The Magnatune Record Label in September and got so much buzz over there (you can read some of it here), that the band has decided to re-sequence the record back to the originally intended sequence, and re-master it to make it sound like it was originally intended. Why? Read this Baltimore Sun article to find out.
This is a Beechfields exclusive - not only will you be getting completely new artwork, but also a new sequence and extensive liner notes. All for only $5.00 plus shipping.
This new record has slowly been gaining the respect of fans by laying out what The Big Takeover describes as "11 highly melodic, totally tuneful songs buttressed by rushing, bright guitars...that also alights on late period, nicer Superchunk and Tsunami." Amplifier Magazine suggests that, "The Collective Now, exude[s] an infectious stroke of grooviness not heard since Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, Pinback or The Swirlies."
Re: seldon plan retooling email - You deserve all the accolades you have been getting! Know you are in my top 5 of Baltimore Bands and would likely be number one for sure if I was able to hear more of you in concert! But truly, I am so impressed that you find time to do it all and keep your record label alive. Kudos to you! ;)
hey, have an idea for those of us who cannot get up to nyc on oct 27 to see the screening of the movie "Close To Midnight" that your music is in. How about checking if the Charles will be playing it so you can plan a gig across the street at the metro gallery during its stint and we can see both the film then you all live! would be sweet! :)
If I were really rich and had lots of (cash/space/friends/drugs/influence) I'd defintately have you guys play my son's bat mitzva.
Unfortuntaely I'm not rich... my list of friends is modest... I have no drugs...I don't have a son. Hell, I'm not even jewish. The only thing I can say is that I dig the new tunes. The old tunes too.
Hello .... wishing you a happy holiday weekend ...and wanted to acknowledge what a great song " Coloured Lenses" is ..... looking forward to hearing more.... regards :>kc
The Seldon Plan was featured as a taste of the day at www.eartaste.com today - thanks!!!
Dance, Despite The Obvious
Start off this warm, beautiful hump day with the guitars ringing, drums pounding, and organ swirling. I’m psychohistorically traveling through my personal galaxy of “noise in the silences” with my feet pounding the pavement almost as smoothly as the drummer. It’s easy to break a sweat in this heat, but these guys make the perspiration all worthwhile. Shoutout goes to the subtle flavorings of Brandywine Situation.
Most excellent to hear the new (and old) songs last night; can't wait to hear the new record!! Fun to be in Baltimore again too and sing some tunes with the lovely mistress of Airport Boulevard. :)
Rachel and I are looking forward to the new album. Maybe someday you guys can make a trip out to WV and we'll be able to see you guys play like the good old days in Wyatt's Saloon.
