The Transparent Cube is really just me (Steven Rhodes) pretending to be a band. I write and record songs in between working as a landscape architect. Weekends, evenings, and whenever normal people tend to socialise. I like owls, swallows, robins, hoop pines, the deep-sea, wind in the trees, shooting stars, train travel at dusk, blue-green (the colour), late-afternoon-walking, lightning, odd humour, hallways, mythological creatures, suburban-rural edges, the crescent moon, colour theory, and writing on fogged up windows.
What?
Melodic, folkish, darkish, countryish pop songs that are usually in a minor key. I use guitars, ukulele, mandolin, keyboards, drum programming, recorders and kazoo. Generally lyric-driven songs with attention to melody and vocal harmonies. I have difficulty playing a riff and singing at the same time. I like strumming. I've played live once. It felt quite strange.
Where?
I record in my bedroom. My computer is wedged between my bed and a wall, making the process of recording simultaneously impractical and infuriating. I use my PC with a desktop pencil microphone and an ad-hoc stretched-stocking pop screen. Inserting leads into my soundcard may or may not induce total shutdown. It’s a lottery.
When?
The songs included here were recorded over the last 12 months or so. I’m not sure as to exactly what days. I could probably find out but it would be a lot of effort and for very little remuneration.
Why?
Jeez, get off my back will ya? Just a hobby I guess. I’m not from a musical background but somehow gravitated towards songwriting. Like how thousands of thrashing mackerel might gravitate towards a trawler net. While my songs may lack the gloss of studio production and mastering, I’m pretty happy with the quality given my limited instrumental ability and unreliable vocal skills.
Songwriting is the ultimate artform for me – it encompasses writing, singing, composing, playing, production and artwork.

I think because they are so deadpan, the sight of them cracking up is that much funnier. That was one of the best things about seeing them live...they would make each other laugh once in a while.
I just remembered this: the BBC is re-releasing the radio series with outtakes. I think it comes out in November. Not as good as seeing them crack up, but hearing them make goofs is probably pretty fabulous, too!
Hope you're having a great night. Or I guess day where you are, right?
Ah, finally, someone wants to put my expertise to use. :D
Here's what I heard secondhand from someone who asked Bret after one of the guys' recent concerts about outtakes and such: They might release Seasons 1 and 2 together and include extras from Season 1. Now, was Bret pulling this person's leg? I don't know. If not, they must exist somewhere.
I read an interview somewhere with Rhys Darby where he said they filmed two endings to the last eppy of Season 1. So that may be somewhere? He also said that the guys cracked up in so many takes that he sometimes ended up just delivering his lines to empty chairs because they had to leave the room. Certainly one would think someone filmed some of this cracking up. I've noticed that Jemaine looks like he's about to lose it in a few scenes that made it on TV, so there must be footage somewhere of the scenes they couldn't use, right?
But, if the real question is, are these outtakes and bloopers available for viewing anywhere? Nope, not that I have ever found.
Cheers man. I'm pretty sure the vocal effect on Bulletproof is something very basic like a delay or a chorus or a reverb (or some combination of the three).
You know, that's a good question. I would say they're big here, but I may be delusional b/c I'm a huge fan and have managed to surround myself with other fans of the show.
For sure, they're bigger here in the U.S. vs. Oz. However, maybe not as big as you may think when you consider that the show is only available on HBO (which is a paid service that most households don't subscribe to). Good question indeed.
Hey, aren't ya'll getting FotC through Channel 10 sometime soon?
thankyou, it my pleasure - your paintings are incredible. looking forward to global domination...thats what its all about lets face it. ...(oh and good tunes) a
