Thione Diop was born in Senegal, West Africa to a long ancestral line of griot drummers. Thione began to study the djembe at age five with master drum teachers. He left Senegal in 1998 to live in Seattle, where he has been teaching and performing ever since.
He has toured America, Canada and Japan sharing his culture and performing with the percussion ensemble he formed in 2001, YEKE YEKE.
Thione has been a guest performer with some fine artists including Mamady Keita, Poncho Sanchez and Max Romeo. His influences include his mentor Ousmane N’Diaye, Famadou Konate and the late great Mongo Santamaria. Thione has released three CD’s and an instructional DVD. Every year he takes people to Senegal to study drum and dance and experience griot culture.
His newest release, JAMMU ADUNA captures the joy and energy of live performance and the exceptional talents of the musicians on this CD.
