Sounds Like
Attending a Thomas Dimuzio performance is like lying underneath a web of freeway bridges with your eyes closed, blocking out all visuals except the brief daggers of light that flicker with each passing car. There is a sense of probable dread-- metal, wooden or cigarette debris from the vehicles could fly off and injure you-- but also one of hypnotized calm, thanks to the amplified hum of Michelin and Goodyear against greased concrete. Dimuzio, a San Francisco electro-noise composer, seemingly replicates this experience with massive, body-vibrating drones punctuated by abrupt, skreeing hits of white noise. His improvised performances-- usually performed with guitar feedback and short-wave radio files processed with a laptop and CDJ player-- explore the gray area between tranquility and disarray, and they can draw your imagination into a wilderness it will refuse to leave, even when your nerves are shot by so many conflicting emotions.—Cameron Macdonald/Pitchfork
San Francisco-based Dimuzio is one of those unsung artistic figures whose influence and abilities have substantially outstripped his visibility. Composer, multi-instrumentalist, sound designer, experimental electronic musician, collaborator and mastering engineer - Dimuzio has been busy doing his thing(s) since the late 1980's, but is still only known to a small circle of electronic music enthusiasts. A true sonic alchemist who can seemingly create music events out of almost anything, Dimuzio's listed sound sources on his various CDs include everything from "modified 10 speed bicycle" and "resonating water pipe" to short-wave radios, loops, samplers and even normal instruments such as clarinet and trumpet. And while his wide range of musical interests make it impossible to pin a label on him, Dimuzio clearly has an insider's knowledge of older experimental musical forms such as musique concrete and electroacoustic, as well as more current ambient-industrial, noise and post-techno styles.
As a collaborator, he has contributed to numerous artists and ensembles, such as 5uu's, Chris Cutler, Tom Cora, Fred Frith, Dan Burke/Illusion Of Safety, Due Process, Matmos, Negativland and Paul Haslinger, and has toured North America and Europe as a solo act. His solo CD releases include Slew, spanning 14 years of compilation tracks, 2002's double live CD Mono::Poly, 1997's double studio CD Sonicism, the ReR Megacorp remastered and reissued HEADLOCK, early cassette works compiled on Louden, and Markoff Process, from 1994.
