We are an extended vocal improvising duo, using multi-effect devices to alter and enhance the sound of the voice. Electronic keyboards are also employed, on occasion, to add colour and depth.
While there may be some discussion of content prior to performances, the actual events are spontaneous and open to any change of direction. Obscure text fragments constructed by James are often employed in pieces, though these never follow a narrative course.
While we have each previously performed, both separately and together, in other ensembles, this particular configuration formed in late 2006. Our first public performance was in November of that year, at the Gladstone Hotel Art Bar as part of Dougal Bichan's bitchin' series. Subsequent performances have included James' radio programme "Electric Storm", AIMToronto's NOW! Lounge series, a return engagement at the Art Bar, and the Toronto New Music Marathon. We have also appeared numerous times at the CoexisDance series.
Recently, our good friend Rik McLean at Ping Things updated the blurb for our debut CD at his site with the following paragraph:
"Well known as both a musician and strong supporter of the Toronto abstract/ambient scene, James Bailey has collaborated on his latest release with Vanda Cordier under the name Tidal Pool, a duo who's self-titled debut inspires the imagination through its fascinating use of processed vocals. Using distorted and manipulated voices, Bailey and Cordier have recorded and improvised this collection of tracks in real-time, a process that gives the disc a feeling of urgency and spontaneity."
