ABOUT UPCOMING PROJECTS:
On June 14, 2008, Tim directed the world premiere of the full-orchestra version of his Wedding Mass in Carnegie Hall with a festival chorus of over 120 singers! This concert was produced in collaboration with Distinguished Concerts International New York.
ABOUT THE COMPOSER:
Timothy Michael Powell is a composer, conductor, songwriter, painter, and poet. He graduated from Belmont University in 1996 with a Bachelors in Music and again in 2000 with a Masters. He was the 1999 National Choristers Guild Scholar and a recipient of a Fulbright grant for study in Bulgaria in 2002. Powell finished his doctorate at the University of South Carolina in 2004. He and his wife Jennifer live in North Augusta, SC with their daughter Lily, dog Wolfy "Amadeus" and their cat Clara "Schumann". He is the Director of Choral Activities at Davidson Fine Arts School in Augusta, GA and Director of the Davidson Chorale.
ABOUT THE MUSIC:
"New Places" was recorded in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and features lush strings, ambient acoustic and electric guitar loops, African drumming, and wood flute - perfectly capturing the text, which gives poetic homage to J.R.R. Tolkien. Help Tim get this song on the new HOBBIT MOVIE by adding the song to your site, sending out bulletins to all your friends, and listening often. Check out Tim's blog for more specifics.r="1">
"Mirabile Mysterium" was composed in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2003 during the composer's Fulbright tenure, and is indicative of Powell's signature motet style - close, earthy harmonies in homophonic texture underlying finely-crafted, memorable melodies based on original chants.
"Wedding Mass" is his most recent work for choir, piano, and orchestra, and is characterized by sparkling harmonies and soaring themes. The "Kyrie" was originally written for his sister's wedding, and is gaining popularity as a bridal processional in both choral and instrumental forms.
"Take Me to the Mountain, Lord" was composed for the Chapel Choir from St. Augustine's Episcopal Chapel at Vanderbilt University in 2000. It features original lyrics, jazz harmonies, an impressive soprano solo, and an exciting, pulsating climax based on joyful, almost carribean rhythms. This performance features "Carolina Alive," the vocal jazz ensemble from the University of South Carolina directed by Shannon Jeffries.
