Singer/songwriter/pianist Todd Alsup is a welcome throwback to classic songwriting and showmanship – an exciting artist who can consistently rock a crowd with astonishing vocals and honest songs bursting with groove and personality. Released in 2008, Todd’s debut EP “Facts & Figures” has been enthusiastically received, with critics hailing Todd’s combination of “giddy piano-pop, old-school soul and free-spirited songs,” as an “earnest if unlikely divide between Ben Folds and John Legend.” (Performing Songwriter, June 2008).
Growing up near Detroit, Todd was attracted to the classic sounds of ‘60s soul and ‘70s pop at an early age. “I remember discovering my parents’ record collection – The Beatles, Carole King, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel,” he says. “I spent hours and hours wearing down their vinyl, simply captivated with artists like Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin who could deliver a melody and lyric like no one else. Storytellers and soul singers – those were my idols.”
Recently, Todd was honored to join a prestigious list of artists endorsed by Yamaha. He was profiled in Billboard Magazine last fall as an Underground Artist to watch, and was featured on Billboard.com. His single "The Good Fight" has been taking college radio by storm and is receiving regular airplay on Sirius Satellite Radio, as well as New York's Q104.3.
Last fall, Todd was selected to showcase at the NACA Northeast Convention, and he spend spring 2009 on a tour of colleges and universities throughout the Northeast. Meanwhile, he regularly thrills faithful crowds on tour and at popular downtown NYC clubs. Equally impressive in solo and full-band performances, Todd drawa audiences in with his remarkable voice and unforgettable storytelling. Todd is currently working on a full-length album.
What the critics are saying:
..
"The combination of giddy piano pop, old-school soul and free-spirited songs finds Alsup treading an earnest if unlikely divide between Ben Folds and John Legend. However, he's too talented to be gauged by comparisons." - Performing Songwriter (June 2008)
"The best pop/r&b hybrid I've heard in more than a year! Merging Stevie Wonder with John Legend and the pop smarts of Jon McLaughlin. Ear-bending hooks that will control you for days." - Stereo Subversion (1/21/08)
"Todd Alsup proves that some pop can still transcend the suspect platitudes most listeners have come to expect... by balancing his serious musicianship with a hint of gentle playfulness... His songs shimmer with warmth, allowing them to be pensive and personal without ever teetering on standoffish and insular. He admixes into this recipe his significant vocal range... with an integrity equal to that displayed by his piano playing. As his career keeps galloping, be sure to check out its vital velocity." - Jezebel Music (3/30/09)
