I play bass (acoustic & electrified), plus some pretty good piano & other keyed things, and love to write music. For the last four years I've been touring and recording with Ani DiFranco. She is just as great as you think, if you think she is great, which I do immensely. We started off as a duo in 2004, making as much racket as possible with acoustic instruments, then added mr. Mike Dillon (vibes thru guitar pedals, marimba, tabla, timpani of course) in '06. Lush and heavy but can be zoomed in on a dime. There's plenty of room for bowing, plucking, drumming, and all manner of sounding the upright bass. Last year the fantabulous Allison Miller joined on drums, and that's been huge...
I also play lots of music in NYC. The shows listed here are my own band, Blood Orange. It's indie-jazz-rock music played (it's been said) with commitment, humor, and free-jazz spirit. We've been called "headphone jazz". Sometimes the band, when it's good, already sounds like a remix of itself. We play melodies you can sing. To join our mailing list, click here.
Some recent recordings for other folks: Ani DiFranco "Red Letter Year" (fall 2008) - also "Reprieve", "Canon", & "Knuckle Down", Trey Anastasio "Bar 17", Erin McKeown "Lafayette" & "Sing You Sinners", Stebmo's "Stebmo" with Bill Frisell & Matt Chamberlain, Erik Deutsch "Fingerprint", Adam Levy "A Nice Place To Live", Etienne de Rocher "Etienne de Rocher", Noe Venable "Summer Storm Journals", David Berkeley "Strange Light". Recently I produced a record by one of my favorite songwriters, Nels Andrews ("Off-Track Betting"), whose southwest folk seems to have eaten Hunter Thompson's breakfast. That might have been my fault. Adam Levy, Michael Jorgensen, & Ben Perowsky filled out the band. The record - "Off Track Betting" - is out on Reveal in Europe and newly available in the US from Signature Sounds. Check it out! Others which I recently produced and mixed, available soon: Rebecca Fanya's debut record, Jessica Lurie "Shop of Wild Dreams", and the Emma debut (Erin McKeown & Allison Miller). Oh and my own new record! That came out June 10 2008 on Cryptogramophone. It's called "Tiny Resistors" and it turned out good. A review.

So, you guys were pretty awesome at Telluride. Especially at SOUND CHECK! Woot, that was cool. You may have also seen me in a white bandana jumping up and down, dancing madly to (let me think here) your right hand side of the stage. I took a bunch of pictures too that should be done tomorrow. You should come check them out when you get a chance. By the way, I waited forever for a chance to shake you and Ani's hands, but, alas, I lost my focus when Ryan Adams and the Cardinals came on. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how amazing that was. Anyway, I'm done blabbering on like I know you. It's just I really appreciate, well, I have to say the whole band is pretty fucking amazing now. You guys are definitely tight. Hope your travels are treating you well, and I'm sorry I didn't get to see you guys in SLC. Many blessings--Julie
You look like you had fun at Langerado. We like to see you when you look like you're having a good time. http://www.iclips.net/content.php?content_id=14259
