For Tom Tyler, it all started sometime in the mid eighties, buried under the
bed
covers, listening to Mike Allen on London's Capitol Radio instead of doing his homework. It was there that he was
first introduced to the robotic funk of electro and the rugged beat assaults of
early Hip Hop, a formative experience in the life of this Thames
Estuary producer. From there its been a musical journey that has found definition
in a total lack of ambition, irreverence and, very frequently, bare faced cheek.
Describing his sound as borrowed, samples very much provide the sub-strata
for
Tylers night vision productions. Finding sound source in the grooves of
charity shop relics,
Tom approaches music with the same skewed nonchalance with which he approaches
life; liberate a beat, take a sound, add a synth or two, invite a friend to contribute, drink a
bottle or ten of red tinted elixir while it all gestates, and there you go: another
drum heavy bugged eyed soundscape.
Over the course of 2 albums and 3 EPs (also collated as a singles collection), and remixes for the likes of The Cinematic Orchestra, Royce Da 5'9" Feat Eminem, and Sofa Surfers,
hes developed from being a magpie chancer (albeit one with a
knack for contextualizing samples into an original composition), to his
current status as the pre-eminent purveyor of down tempo depth on the block.
Whereas samples dominated his early recordings, Tyler gradually increases the presence of live instruments on his recordings, employing the talents of friends and various session musicians.
Additionally, Tom is a key member of Stromba (FatCat recording artists/ badger
obsessed weirdos) and has other various clandestine projects in the pipeline...
