  • Bio

Torun Eriksen began her musical talents as a music student in High School in Norway. Beginning at the age of six, she sang in various gospel choirs, and by the age of 19 became a featured soloist. A background steeped in soul, jazz and pop, it was through her choral experience that she began writing her first compositions, influenced by the world of jazz standards via the Real Book. After moving to Oslo in 1997, she enrolled into the Norwegian Institute for Stage and Studio (NISS). While studying, she sang in different cover bands and played concerts all over town. At home, often during the nights, she wrote music and lyrics. By this time, Torun had already met bass player Kjetil Dalland, still, today, considered one of her closest musical partners, and together with a few others, they formed a band and made a demo recording of Torun’s songs. Two of these tunes would later appear on her debut album, but so far, few had heard them live. In the mean time, Torun’s great live performances made her a favored vocalist among colleagues. She recorded with other bands, such as Palace of Pleasure, on their Norwegian Grammy award-winning album ”Popoganda” (1999), on Mulen’s Portland Combo’s ”Mulen’s Femte” (2001), and on Knut Halmrast’s ”Little Pillow” (2003). With Mulen’s Portland Combo she also performed at festivals, the nationally broadcasted Salvation Army’s charity Christmas concert, and in various national television programs in Norway. Then, the band Chipahua asked her to join them, and she filled Sissel Endresen’s place as vocalist there from 2002 to 2003, appearing at various prestigious jazz festivals such as the Molde International Jazz Festival and Bergen Nattjazz. Then, one day, Bugge Wesseltoft, accidently heard Torun’s demo. He fell in love with the song Glittercard, and invited Torun to do a record on his label Jazzland Recordings. The album Glittercard was released internationally in April 2004, and received accolades from the press: ”Norway gives birth to yet another exceptional vocal talent in jazz” (VG), ”Shining” (Dagsavisen), and ”An extraordinary vocal talent” (Dagbladet), are just some of the superlatives that Norwegian music critics used to describe her debut. In 2007, Prayers & Observations, again led critics to applaud and state that Torun “is a first class artist“ (Aftenposten) and that she “now, more that ever before, is ready for the big world out there” (Puls). With P&O she extensively toured Europe and performed at major festivals, such as North Sea Jazz Festival. This album also initiated collaborations with other constellations, such as chamber orchestras and choirs; Jazzchor Freiburg (Germany), asked permission to arrange several of Torun’s pieces for choir, and together they have toured in Asia and Germany, Switzerland, and France with this material. Passage was released April 2010, once more followed by raving reviews. The national radio station, NRK jazz, said: “Torun Eriksen emerges as a world-class artist and songwriter - Norway's equivalent to Joni Mitchell." The sold out release concert, and the successful release tour, shows that her fans agree. Torun is currently working on new projects. Apart from writing music to her next solo album, she has just finished a Christmas recording in Norwegian, entitled “Sanger Om Glede Og Fred”, together with highly respected Norwegian musicians like Frøydis Grorud (sax, flute), Bjørn Klakegg (guitars) and Bjørn Kjellemyr (double bass). Among the songs on the album, you will find Torun’s Norwegian translation of Joni Mitchell’s “River”, and her own composition “Vente På Jul”. The album will be released 22nd of Nov on Jazzland Recordings.
