About me: In 1986 Hasbro released a Rock and Roll video fashion doll line called JEM. JEM was really Jerrica disguise by a hologram. JEM was the lead singer of JEM and the Holograms; the Holograms included Jerrica's sister Kimber, and foster sisters Aja and Shana. JEM and the Holograms competed against the Misfits (Pizzazz, Roxy, Stormer) and Eric Raymond for control of Starlight Music -- the studio Jerrica and Kimber's father created. This story line was revealed in Truly Outrageous! the movie, which was release in 1985, and seen in fifteen seven minute segments on Sunbow's Super Sunday/Super Saturday. These became five episodes in the JEM animated series, in 1986.
..
Video and Danse became friends with Jem during the filming of Starbright. Video's cousin Clash became friends with the Misfits. In 1987 these charters were revealed as dolls, along with Raya the new Hologram drummer and Jetta the new Misfits sax player. Hasbro also brought out the Glitter'n Gold line, with Jem/Jerrica, Rio, new Roadster and fashions. Hasbro also released Synergy the Holographic Computer as a doll, and developed 3 of Christy Marx (head writer for the show) Starlight girls in to dolls. Flash'n Sizzle Jem/Jerrica and the cheaper Rock'n Curl Jem finished out the 1987 line.
In 1988 Hasbro was going to release Rockin' Romance Jem, American Beauty Jem, Hollywood Jem, new Holograms Astral and Regine, a new Misfit Graphix, along with the new band, the Stingers (Riot, Rapture, Minx). Due to disappointing sales the 1988 line was cut back to a discount line, before eventually being canceled completely. JEM did have decent sells, and the number one rated girls cartoon, but did not bring in the money Hasbro was expecting. Coupled with Hasbro's financial difficulties, gave Hasbro reason to put Jem on the chopping block.
In 2003 Rhino released JEM on DVD and sales were great. Before the last set came out Rhino lost the rights. Since 2003 Hasbro has been updating trademarks for JEM and JEM and the Holograms, teasing Jem fans.
