We met the legendary British DJ, John Peel; shortly after my band Tours pressed our first record, ‘Language School’. We were young, thrusting and our lack of inhibition led us to think that all we needed to do to get radio play was to make our way to London, Dick Whittington style and naturally, the King of Indie Music would grant us an audience. Naïve and audacious to an extreme we jumped on the 9.30am from Bournemouth Central to London Waterloo with a box of our records and a fervent belief in our own God like qualities. When we got to London almost two hours later, we struck out for unknown destinations on the Tube map with no real forward planning.
When Ronnie Mayor approached me about forming a band, Tours, with him I had initially found him to be a mirror image of my own unbridled arrogance so I naturally turned him down flat. His ideas were the usual over the top mission statements that most young men with surging testosterone made. Namely that we would be ‘The Best Band In The World!’
Eventually he persuaded me that he and I would be stronger together and I relented. Tours began rehearsals and less than six months later we were stalking the only Radio DJ who would play our record.
well f*** me,cant believe you found me,thanks for doing so,cos believe it or not 'language school was and is still one of my most favourite songs ever.ive been around i can tell ya and this song still does it for me,cheers! the only problem i have is that many years ago this was nicked from my collection and i failed to get another copy,so hearing a slice of it here is bliss, cheers again. question is,can i get a copy from somewhere? i dont belive in extortionate prices so dont try and take me savings,it couldnt have been more than 75p at the time, but i would pay a little bit more than that now. yes i am tight but we are hitting a recession. once again many many thanks for finding me,top band ,top songs and more people need to be told. from a wet and windy north east!!!
Hey Tours, Did I ever tell you the story about when I met Johnny Ramone in the balcony of the Ritz, while seeing XTC and then walking out chatting with Sylvia Miles from "Midnight Cowboy."? Sounding fresh, good luck with your return.
