Denizen Kane is a writer, MC, and musician born and raised in Tree
City. He is co-founder of both the Asian American spoken word
quartet, I Was Born With Two Tongues (1998-2003), and the seminal
Chicago hip hop crew, Typical Cats (2000-present). He currently has
three solo albums, Tree City Legends Vols. I & II and his newest LP,
Brother Min’s Journey to the West, a Tree City Legend told entirely in
the voice of Min, the youngest of the Kane brothers. His poetry has
been published in numerous periodicals and anthologies and he has
performed on three seasons of the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents
Def Poetry Jam. Denizen has been a Youth Speaks Artist in Residence
and a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 2008.
He has toured from New York to Tokyo to Los Angeles, and performed
with many world renown artists. His most recent collaboration, The
Future Project: Sunday Will Come, is a theater piece with Sean San
Jose and Erika Chong Shuch that contains an original musical score by
Denizen. It will run for three weeks at the Intersection for the Arts
in San Francisco, CA in the fall of 2009.
