Influences
All good music is meant to influence us. There are some specific sounds that are in this book including the sounds of George Russell, Alan Jones, Charles Mingus, Phil Wilson, Jiggs Whigham, Cuban Salsa, ECM label, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington and others.
Trombone Encounters is a new project in Portland, Oregon meant to bring together the many wonderful trombonists here to perform and compose.
The First gig was with my long time friend, Dave Bones. We both came from the Boston area. The show was an hour set at a Jazz Festival in town. Bones uses a wide variety of sounds. We always have a good time.
The second phase was to record with Trombonist, Nick Sweet. We recorded 8 tunes in August with a truly great trio. The album "Trombone Encounters" has been released and is available at CDbaby.com and Amazon.com.
In September, we had John Moak with the band and High School Senior Devin Riley sitting in at Mississippi Pizza. John has such a nice sound and melodic concept. And of course a nice cat. Over the Winter break there were two CD release parties with Nick Sweet on trombone. We had trombonists, Andy Morrow, Devin Riley, Sean Wyatt and Anthony Meade sittin in.
I'm looking forward to playing with more players soon.
Check out the mp3s.
