Sounds Like
“Definitely one of the best bands in Leeds” – Leeds Music Scene
"With a swagger in their stride, Unexploded Shells are quite clearly ensconced in the square marked "Classic Pop"... spunky, imaginative guitar pop... a Suede-like panache" - Dom Gourlay, Contactmusic
"infectious alternative pop with the melodious guitar riffs driving the song along at a frantic pace... an instant effect on the listener and remains memorable even after limited listens." - Music Spotlight
"Unexploded Shells di Leeds mostrano in questo nuovo lavoro tutti i miglioramenti che si riservano al terzo singolo, associati ad un coraggio non indifferente: usano la chitarra a mò di violino per contornare la convulsa ritmica di High Times, una specie di incrocio tra i primi Dexys Midnight Runners e un gruppo della prima ondata punk (i Buzzcocks?) che rischia di essere accolto con ironia non necessaria." - Indiepop.it
"one of the few young combos I’ve heard recently whose Libertines jones doesn’t destroy their art by sheer weight of redundant influence alone… messes with The Clash a bit, digs a few Who steps out of Grandpa’s old memorabilia box up in the attic, lets everyone know it’s heard of Television . . . then runs away after 1.41 flicking v-signs over its shoulder." - Trakmarx
"simple, effective, clever and rocking" - Unpeeled
"ace... wire meets kinks" - Nick Scott, Rebellious Jukebox
"rhythmic guitars and a cold, dead pan vocal delivery... a breath of fresh air" – Chris Oddy, The Music Guru
"thrillingly acidic, skewered and abrasive... fiercely confident, asymmetrical, pounding backdrop for the observant and nonplussed vocal stylings" – Lauren Strain, Leeds Music Scene
Now then. We're splitting up very soon, so the two gigs listed above represent your last-but-two and penultimate chances to see us. Details of the final farewell gig will be announced shortly, but in the meantime, why not buy some tickets to come and see us at The Teatime Shuffle on Friday 1 February, which will be a whole pound cheaper than paying on the door and, coincidentally, result in us getting paid slightly more? Simply click on the Paypal link below and tickets will be delivered direct to your door. Or we'll give them to you in person, whichever. Anyway, here's the link:
You can pay by Paypal or credit/debit card and you won't even have to pay for the stamp or envelope or owt. Very nice.
Unexploded Shells is made up of four people with little in common who come from various backwaters of Yorkshire and County Durham but are now based, more or less, in Leeds. Most of our songs don't have much in common either. We choose to see this as a strength.
The tracks on this page were recorded in the summer of 2007 at the excellent Analogue Recording Studios in Hexthorpe, South Yorkshire. More will follow.
September 1:st our 1:st single, Dare To Lick (Hunter's Red Sleeve), from our upcoming album SILENT REVOLUTION,was released and is available on iTunes but also on our MySpace of course!
The album will be released October 1:st and later that month we go on tour in Germany with The Movements.
Without further a do we are pleased to announce the studio is open.
The large live room has acoustically isolated zones, vocal booth, digital capabilities and extensive analogue mixing and mastering facilities.
Contemporary interior design with furniture from bmw and deep shag pile carpets, provided together with excellent engineers, affordable rates, fresh coffee and a private terrace we have created one of the best studios in the north for you.
”Accapellian, Surf, Mariachi, Psych Post-Rock anyone? This is a special mish mash of styles that somehow more than holds itself together to produce an often quite brilliant album. Very good indeed...” Jumbo Records
"Liking this CD album by Gyppos. It seems to be the work of four chaps from the Sheffield region and is comprised of lo-fi indie pop, skewed bluegrass, quirky skiffle & schizoid folk-rock. There's a small bit of them that initially reminds me of old Chicago band 5ive Style but also (musically) Half Man Half Biscuit, fellow Steel City-ers Champion Kickboxer & Bristol's enigmatic Safetyword. Lots of curious guitar dueling, loose pattering drums & eccentric freestyling. It's all really intimate & damn entertaining but most importantly there's a gorgeous homely soul about them being apparent from the intermittent warm parping brass & down at heel vocals. They sound like a chilled bunch who'd I'd most certainly make the effort to catch live. Possibly fans of the likes of early Beta Band, Hood & I, Ludicrous could all find something to fall in love with on this album......'Bold Ambler' is CD only thru Flaming Oh." Norman Records

Hello,
We are playing the lovely Cardigan Arms on the 21st of March. Being foreigners from Sheffield, it would be grand if you could pop in to see us and bring a few other Leedsies with you, if you are free.
Here are a few nice things people have said about us. Have a listen on our page and see if you like what we are up to...
"AN AMAZING LIVE ACT, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEM AGAIN" (Sandman Magazine)
"AN IMPRESSIVE SET FROM A BAND WITH A KNACK FOR WRITING CATCHY SONGS AND DELIVERING THEM LIVE AS WELL AS IN THE STUDIO" (Sandman Magazine)
"PROMISING SONG WRITERS" (Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6)
"THESE DAYS I FIND THRASH AND POWER POP A BIT REPETITIVE, BUT THIS WAS REMINISCENT OF MORRISSEY WHILE STILL BEING PERSONAL, I HEAR THE POSSIBILITY OF A GOOD FUTURE. IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU COULD SUPRISE US ALL ONE DAY". (Paul Gambaccini, BBC Radio 6)
