BIG A LITTLE a BOUNCING BEE, THE SYSTEM MIGHT HAVE GOT U BUT IT WON'T GET ME......
Under this tag, Unsound System has been on the London underground party scene since 1992, although their first self induced crowbar fest was New Years Eve '86. Constantly changing shape and form, but always providing a safe and interesting space to party and get down with heavy bass, good music and great vibes, Unsound definately know how to paarrrrttyyy.
Instumental in huge multi rig parties like the Parkway Cinema in Camden,Kentish town university, Woodgreen theater, Waterden Rd, MAgic roundabout that have been seminal to the party scene, unsound has collaborated with most London sound systems and provided a platform for many underground dj's, mc's and bands to be appreciated.
Often making a political stand, unsound has also been involved with early Criminal Justice Bill actions and Reclaim the Streets parties, and present on the Cannabis MArch and free festivals like the travellers field at Glastonbury etc.
In the last few years, Unsound has been doing its own thing mainly, in order to keep offering people a stimulating environment where to really let go and 'ave it larrrrge. The Smithfield's in 2000 was certainly an example of how keeping it smaller didn't necessarily mean that the party and the vibes would pay the price. we had a proper larf there but it was in the arches in Elephant n' castle really that unsound found the perfect setting .
fuck knows how we got away with it?
a bonfire and a full on party inside and outside in the middle of the elephant n castle, banging until sunday afternoon at the earliest, strategically positioned on the opposite side of the ministry of sound-it seemed appropriate to call it the 'ministry of unsound' and quite unsound it was!!! it went on for three years that did as well---yes we do like to take the piss, always for a good cause though.
More recently and on the strenghts of havin put on events at venues such as the Drome (now SE1club)and the Jamm,Unsound was offered to take on the Redstar in Camberwell Green, South London.
For a long and intense year or more, the Redstar was our home. There we had the opportunity to put on gigs with bands we absolutely love such as The Slackers, Acoustic ladyland, the King Blues, the Deadsilence Syndicate Band,Pama International featuring Lynval Golding just to mention a few and to work with artists such as Jerry Dammers, Nick Mannasseh, Dub Dadda,Beardyman playing alongside underground dj's and producers more known to unsound like Hue Jah Fink?, Jerome Hill,Blackmass Plastics, Warlock, Miss Pink, Deadlock,Billy the Kid,Offshore, Megabitch, Dubversion, Bigga, Dark, Skarper and many more. We also hosted other promotions such as REKNAW featuring Discharge and Back to the Planet, Kingbeat sound system featuring Skinnyman, Keith Lawrence , Blak Twang,CPR featuring kenny ken, EZ rollers and Utah Jazz, Letty from Clandestine featuring Kode9,Distance, Scientist,D1 and many more.
A great challenge and a great success. No regrets in leaving a year later--we achieved what we wanted to achieve. time to move on before we were caught in a pincer movement between pressure from babylon and the darkside.in fact, the growing violence in and around Camberwell and the sad link between nightclubs and gun culture made it an unsafe place. No point in staying in a climate of fear, with the feeling that something horrible was just waiting to happen. Luckily we left before it did and managed to keep it sweet!!
