Metal has always had aggression as its primary component, whether the classic thrash bands of the 80s or the technical death metal warriors of the current age. However, anyone thinking that the sonic conveyance of violence is an easy one to create would be sadly mistaken, as it is as much about heart as it is about savagery. One cannot be had without the other. This musical expression of brutality in its purest form, a purging of all that is dark within the soul and an undying conviction to never compromise is what drove guitarists Matt Miller and Ryan Ogle to form Lawrence, Kansas based Violent Design in 2005.
A combined 20 years of experience playing in such bands as Human Ritual, Dead Skin Factor, and Hateball led Ogle and Miller to eschew all that is trendy and presumptuous in favor of music that possesses all the subtly of a claw hammer to the cranium. Joining the metal journeyman are bassist Dustin Johnson (ex-Initium, ex-Terra Firma) and vocalist Mike Yager (ex-Third World Sin), two experienced Kansas City area musicians with a will to succeed on their own terms that rivals that of their bands mates. (NOTE: The drum spot is currently vacant, but in the process of being filled).
Combining the blunt force trauma of death metal with moments of groove technicality, and percussive prowess with vintage hardcore’s attitudinal kick to the chops, Violent by Design brings a musical arsenal that is as stimulating as it is damaging to the immune system. Yager delivers his lyrical assaults with wild-eyed rage, Miller and Ogle reel off speeding licks and concrete busting riffs, and Johnson attacks his four-strings with surgical precision, providing fleet-fingered fret runs as effortlessly as he holds down the low-end pummel.
Violent by Design has shared the stage with such national acts as Goatwhore, Exitium, Unmerciful, Incantation, Year of Desolation, Internal Suffering and will soon join Into Eternity and 1349 on stage. And the live show? It is five assassins moving in lockstep, even as the impossibly energetic Yager flies from left to right and from front to back, never missing a beat and always entertaining the audience.
Violent by Design seeks to wage war without the rules of engagement. Violence is still the answer!
