The Viva Noir is a Post-Punk, Art Rock, and Brit-Pop-inspired quartet from Buffalo, NY.
The band came together in the
winter of 2007 after a long lost weekend spent spinning records, discussing
the decline of western art and literature, and imbibing many a drink at local
Queen City watering holes.
J. Taylor Braley, as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, fuses street poetry to jagged chords in order to bridge the gap
between Paul Westerberg’s boozy Americana and Morrissey’s British romanticism.
Angel Rivera, the lead guitarist, uses his
instrument to paint broad strokes of music across the Viva Noir canvas,
incorporating the chorus-dripping sounds of Andy Summers, the arpeggio runs of Johnny Marr, and the fat, dirty, & loud punk rock sounds of
Mick Jones.
Drummer Jayme Kelly is the rock solid foundation on
which the Viva Noir sound is built. His playing reflects a lifetime of performing in
smoky haunts, providing the backbeat to a variety of musical styles from punk rock to
to jazz and blues.
Rich Flierl, on bass, is a tall and imposing
figure who provides the low end rumble required to anchor the group's sound, ala Peter Hook and Mike Mills.
Influences
1977, lazy girls with well-stocked bookshelves, our own frozen tundra
and shining lands across the sea, black & white, clean living under difficult
circumstances...
Our goal is to make music as cold, dark, and restless as our precious City of No Illusions....
Sounds Like
Musically, we’ve been compared to/influenced by groups like British Sea Power, Gang of Four, The Replacements, Afghan Whigs, Joy Division, The Smiths, Pulp, The Jam, The Saints, Nation of Ulysses, Bloc Party, Gene, Material Issue, The London Suede, Kaiser Chiefs, The Libertines, The Prids, Interpol, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Otis Redding, Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, Manic Street Preachers, Scott Walker, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, David Bowie, Minutemen, and Iggy Pop.
"Film noir is often associated with an urban setting, and a few cities—Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Chicago, in particular—are the location of many of the classic films. In the eyes of many critics, the city is presented in noir as a "labyrinth" or "maze." Bars, lounges, nightclubs, and gambling dens are frequently the scene of action. The climaxes of a substantial number of film noirs take place in visually complex, often industrial settings, such as refineries, factories, trainyards, power plants—most famously the explosive conclusion of White Heat. In noir it is always night and it always rains."
We currently have a limited edition 6 song EP available and have
contributed a song ("Somewhere on Christmas Eve") to the Buffalo Musicians Against Autism CD, My Favorite Gift is
You. Both CDs are available for purchase from the Full Rabbit Records and Viva
Noir websites. Work on our new CD is currently underway. The full-length album will be
released in late 2009.
