Voices Underwater formed in the winter of 2001 in Denver, CO. Shortly thereafter, they signed to Action Driver Records and released Electric Birds, a cohesive blend of traditional rock instrumentation with analog synthesizer and a drum machine.
Their second self-titled release saw VU delving into new textural and rhythmic possibilities with full creative control. Transitioning from sparse, moody beats lined with slinky guitars, the album flows seamlessly into fist-pumping rockers, driven by head-scratching bass acrobatics.
Voices Underwater is currently playing live shows in support of their brand new full length, Trip the Light Fantastic. Kaffeine Buzz called it thinking mans music, taking the genre of indie rock in a completely different direction.
VU has had the pleasure of performing with The Wrens, Dressy Bessy, John Vanderslice, Crooked Fingers, The Delgados, Six parts Seven, Kinski, Don Caballero, Shannon Wright, HIM, Azure Ray, Helio Sequence, Mates of State, Tristeza, Karate, CEX, Denali, Apple Seed Cast, Starflyer 59, The Only Children, Just a Fire, and The Czars.
VU is the brainchild of founding members Ben DeVoss (vox, guitar) and Chris White (bass, keys, accordion). Morgan McDevitt (drums) joined the band in January 2005. VU continues to write and record, pushing the envelope into new uncharted soundscapes.
