2004 Voluntary Mother Earth evolved from the debris of Denton, Texas, U.S.A. around Akihiko Hayakawa in the fall of 2004, in a local smoke-filled coffee shop named Kharma.
2005 "Voluntary Invasion", our first EP was recorded and self released. Kept on playing Denton shows, and toured Texas a couple of times.
2006
The band relocated to Tokyo, Japan. Aki's student visa in America expired. Fortunately, the band was yet to expire. With a new bassisit Noriff Micky, a brand new Voluntary Mother Earth was born.
2007
-First US tour took place in May through June, covering 14 cities including New York City, Boston, Chicago, D.C., and Austin, among other cities.
-"Unacceptable Vegetable", our first full-length album, was created right after the tour, and again self released. It was received with more than a dozen good reviews in the U.S. and Europe. Some of which you can find below this mumbling.
2008
In June, Fujita Fajita, a chiropractitioner, was welcomed into the band as new drummer. The band is now in its tightest shape.
2009
Second U.S. tour executed, causing Aki to have another batch of debts.
What We're About
Absurdist Rock Combo from Tokyo Japan?
Voluntary Mother Earth is an eccentric rock band from Tokyo whose non-mainstream, non-safe, sometimes extreme, sometimes hilarious, yet seriously composed rock music has been compared to such bands as The Mars Volta, System of a Down, Primus, Boredoms, John Zorn, and Frank Zappa.
With diverse influences from classical to jazz to avant-garde to country to classic rock to heavy metal to a low-budget local TV commercial and more, mixed in a way that's absurd yet catchy, Voluntary Mother Earth will live up to your expectation.
"Life's not about what you do. It's about how you do it."
-by Akihiko Hayakawa, after fasting and meditating in the depths of Mt. Fuji for a week.
Hey Aki, it was really fun with playing a show with Voluntary Mother Earth. You guys are extremely awesome! Please come to North Carolina next time you guys travel to the States. We'd love to have ya. Hope the rest of the tour went well.
