Thanks to All The Rage:
It's been too long since Nashville has heard any new music from local rock guy Mark Bond.
Well, you probably have heard him play recently - he became The Features' keyboardist in 2006, after leaving De Novo Dahl, a band he co-fronted and contributed songs to during their Cats and Kittens era.
Considering his old band's giddy nature and the amount of time that has lapsed since then, you might assume this five-song EP (available for free download on MySpace) would be bursting at the seams with busy melodies and hurried statements. Not so.
The soft and folksy Life is remarkably calm and composed, effortlessly nailing a breezy vibe that so many modern singer-songwriters try way too hard to capture.
"Well Known Theme" is a musical tropical swirl, blurring a plaintive Pet Sounds melody with a Ventures surf beat, the steel guitar from "Sleepwalk" and just a pinch of yacht rock slickness.
With swinging rocker "Jealousy Kills," you can count Bond among the numerous local performers evidently inspired by Features frontman Matthew Pelham, but the rest of Bond's tunes have a distinct, melancholy sweetness that's all his own.
