Vox Congo draws on the rich traditions of modern and folk music from across Congo, Central Africa. Playing soukous, zouk, rumba, gospel, reggae, aguaya and pende folk rhythms and more, this 5 piece band injects energy and joy into their sweet harmonies and irresistible rhythms. Beginning in their home town Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the members of Vox Congo performed as part of an elite musical group employed to perform at government events. In 1998 war began, and members of Vox Congo found themselves in the middle of a horrific civil war that claimed around 3.8 million lives. They managed to get by and were able to travel through Kenya and then to Malaysia performing their music along the way. In 2002, they were sponsored to come to Australia and have been delighting Australian audiences since. They have just finished recording their debut album, ..Kinanga.. (meaning good news) released in April 2005. It's a great collection of gospel songs which draws from the many traditions of their country. Having been through much struggle along their journeys, ..Kinanga.. acts as a remembrance of this time but also as a thanksgiving for what they have been blessed with. With such energy and conviction Vox Congo truely capture the passion and joy of African gospel music. Each band member is highly skilled in a broad range of musical styles and traditional dance. Their songs, sebens (extensive dance sections) and animations (an effusive vocal style) are an exciting aural and visual feast. Congolese music the source of Latin rhythms, American Jazz, modern African dance and gospel continues to inspire musicians and audiences around the world. Come back and check our blog and updates on gigs, CD releases and the progression of the residency status of key band members. Thankyou so much for your prayers and support.
