Inspired by the rythms of Dancehall and Hip Hop, Vox
Sambou started writing songs at the age of 14 in his home town of Limbé
in Northern Haiti. Later studying in Port-Au-Prince, he began performing in
various campuses of the nation's capital. He now lives in Montreal, Canada
where he splits his life between his music (alongside the ever-expanding international
crew Nomadic Massive) and his position as Director of La Maison de Jeunes de
La Cote-des-Neiges (youth community centre). Vox Sambou chose to vocalize himself
sincerely and positively to bring light to the injustices taking place worldwide
and particularely in his homeland of Haiti. He feels, however, that although
it is important to identify the issues surrounding the problem, it is equally
urgent to find concrete solutions. Choosing to express himself in Haiti&8217;s
most widely spoken language, Creole, Vox hopes to bring back a a sens of pride
to his people by sheding light on their rich and unique cultural heritage. His
first single Bato recounts the life of a young Haitian immigrant who makes the
dangerous decision to illegally cross the ocean stretch seperating Haiti and
the US in a clandestine boat. Once in the US, the young man finds himself facing
racism, hardships, broken dreams, solitude and tremendous nostalgy. The theme
of the song has touched home for thousands of Haitians living abroad. The video
has attracted international attention and is on regular rotation on various
Haitian TV stations.
Passionné de musique et surtout inspiré
par le Dancehall, Vox Sambou écrit depuis l'âge de 14 ans dans
sa ville natale Limbé situé au nord d'Haiti et s'est produit sur
plusieurs scènes des campus de Port-au-Prince en Haïti. Aujourd'hui
installé à Montréal, Canada il partage sa vie entre la
musique (membre du collectif international Nomadic Massive) et son poste de
Directeur de la Maison de Jeunes Côte-des-Neiges dont le mandat est de
prévenir la délinquence auprès des jeunes de 11 à
17 ans du quartier Côtes-des-Neiges. Vox Sambou a choisi de se vocaliser
sincèrement et positivement pour dénoncer les injustices dans
le monde et plus particulièrement dans son pays Haiti. Cependant, il
pense, bien qu'il soit nécessaire d'identifier les problématiques,
qu'il est également urgent de trouver des solutions concrètes.
Choisissant de s'exprimer en créole la langue maternelle d'Haiti, Vox
espère apporter un sens de fièreté à ses compatriotes
en mettant l'emphase sur leur riche héritage culturelle. Ses premiers
clips Bato et Idantité, ont été realisés respectivement
par David Smith et Aïda Muluneh. Tandis que dans Idantité, Vox questionne
sa communauté sur sa fierté culturelle et son identité,
Bato traite d'un clandestin Haïtien qui fait le périple vers les
côtes de la Floride en bateau et qui une fois à destination subit
les vicissitudes de la discrimination, de la solitude et de la nostalgie qui
accompagnent l'exil. Le vidéo est en rotation continue en Haïti
et a su attirer l'attention par sa pertinence.
