Biography
Danny Wheeler grew up in West London, and ascended to the top of the UK dance charts and the is CEO of W10 Records.
After collaborating on tracks with Sub Focus, and helping behind the scenes with J Majik’s Infrared Records(label manager 2002-04) and Bryan Gee’s Movement(event manager 1999-02), Danny Wheeler released his first single Ghost (Number 5, UK Dance Chart, 2004), which included Lost Highway (Number 5, UK Dance Chart, 2004) with Sub Focus. Another single, Aura (2005 ), which was the debut track on W10 Records, was received with critical acclaim, the Jazz influenced drum and bass anthem, featured guest vocals from Shae Hamilton. Unhappy just managing and A&Ring someone else’s label and dealing with their distribution, Danny Wheeler formed his own record company, W10 Records, and signed a deal with SRD Worldwide Distribution.
Danny continued his momentum with the label and another critical success, the introduction of The Brookes Brothers, who with their debut release Portal/ Desert Island (2006), established themselves firmly on the map. As with Sub Focus, who also worked with Danny before becoming a successful recording artist, The Brookes Bros have gone on to develop a name in the UK dnb scene.
In late 2006, W10 announced a new label venture called W10 @ Herbal. This has for the last three years become one of the most popular nights at London club Herbal. In this time W10 has also hosted parties at Bar Rumba, The Medicine Bar and The Annexe. All of these parties have helped establish the W10 brand as more than just a record label, but also as a successful events company.
Danny Wheeler is a mover and shaker of the modern music known as drum and bass. During the late 1990s he helped popularize ‘Infrared’ & ‘Movement’ drum and bass music, thus adding to the scene that was and is moving from an underground art form to a legitimate mainstream music style.
His innovative "street marketing" advertising strategy brought a new visibility to W10, as label manager at the record label Infrared, he assisted in steering Infrared to profitability and in handling some of the most prominent dnb recording artists of the late 1990s/early 2000’s in the process.
Additionally, Wheeler was the driving force behind W10 Records, which started the DJ careers of Brookes Bros and Wire and helped establish a number of dnb artistes. At the W10 label, his responsibilities overflowed beyond the world of dnb and into other music styles, including Broken Beat, House music, Nu Jazz.
He attended the University of Southampton majoring in Applied Social Science, then spent some years after graduation working as label manager for his mentor J Majik where they developed the Infrared brand into a global force (making it the first ever dnb label to sell vinyl direct from the Internet). The experience, gave Danny the chance to become well-connected, and learn the skills from a successful entrepreneur.
In the late 1990s, working for Movement London Ltd, Wheeler established a business relationship with dnb record executive producer Bryan Gee. Gee, who had co-founded the V Records label in the early 1990s, taught Wheeler the business of promoting a label, and up to the present date the two work closely together,
Danny brought a new innovation to the record advertising business by shunning the mainstream advertising venues, and opting instead to promote W10 records directly to the consumers via innovative "street marketing" tactics, including passing out sample CDs to local disc jockeys while simultaneously plastering posters and fliers throughout the city to advertise his clients. Wheeler’s strategy brought the W10 message to the listener on the street and appealed to dnb fans in particular because of the non-traditional and rebellious character of the music and its followers.
While at Infrared he managed for the Infrared Krew to appear on the cover of Knowledge, a prestigious honor in the dnb music world. In 2002, Wheeler negotiated an endorsement deal between himself and UK skate brand Addict; the pact was a breakthrough for himself as an artist and saw him featured in advertising for the ever-expanding brand and he also got to tour Japan in 2003 and 2004.
Danny’s promotional skills, with his high sense of organization, meant he oversaw every detail of Infrared and W10 tours and events. The result was a successful programme that attracted a wide audience
