Influences
Sounds Like
Drum & Bass, vocalized, magnetized, good vibes ...
For the last two years, West London has been moving to a different sound. Young, sophisticated and soulful, the sounds of W10 records are synonymous with CEO Danny Wheeler, who from the labels’ inception has been committed to pushing the boundaries of drum and bass music, and using his label to take that sound around the world.
Launched in December 2005, W10 Records marked the start of something very special for Danny Wheeler. Having spent years deep in the scene, Danny was not only a rising super star DJ, but owned one of the finest ears for A+R in the industry. Head hunted by J Majik for the mighty Infrared Records, Danny proved himself invaluable as he helped sign in mixes from Marky, XRS, Sub Focus, Clipz, amongst others, and his talents did not stop there, in collaboration with Subfocus , Danny captured the imagination of the whole scene with ‘Ghost’, released on Infrared in the Summer of 2005. A testament to both his A+R and production skills, ‘Ghost’ would go on to smash into the top 5 UK Dance Charts, be licenced to Andy C’s Nightlife CD and helped lead to Subfocus signing to Ram Records.
Now with the attention and support of the scenes’ biggest players the time was perfect to focus on an individual project and W10 Records was born. Turning down the offers of larger successful labels, Danny put his energy into a label that would accommodate his own versatile creativity, as well as nurture the talents of others who needed a platform like W10, to stretch their own sound.
Now two years on, Danny is showing to an industry hungry for his solo talents and those of other new exciting artists that W10 Records is something special and different. With its first release, W10 001, ‘Aura’ became one of Summer 2005’s biggest hits. Produced by Danny and featuring Shae Hamilton, it would set the standard and build up a devoted underground fan base for W10.
More releases would follow with W10 002, Portal/Desert Island, by Brookes Brothers, released in May 06. Well received by critics, this would be another demonstration of Danny’s A+R skills as The Brookes Bros would go on to be signed to Breakbeat Kaos, with Fresh and Adam F really feeling the tune.
As we enter spring 2008, six more tracks are being added to the W10 back catalogue, a double A single by Danny Wheeler featuring Blu James (who wrote and sang Basement Jaxx’s ‘Red Alert’). Two tracks from French producer Redeyes whos tune on W10 is currently getting played by Laurent Garnier & Giles Peterson!!. There is also two killer tracks from W10 new signing, the hugely talented DJ Wire (getting support from DJ Hype & Pendulum). With the characteristic Neo-Soul and Cosmic Sounds that W10 has been pushing, and production quality that Danny is known for, these are a testament to the vision that inspired W10’s creation.
Also staying true to the vision behind W10 Records, Danny has been able to invest his energy and time into these projects whilst still stretching out his talents.
Taking inspiration from the musical melting pot of West London, his projects lined up include two new tracks featuring House legend Kathy Brown, a remix for Afronaught’s (Bugz In The Attic), a broken beats tune with Mark Force (also of Bugz In The Attic) and of course not forgetting his first love, Drum and Bass, there are also forthcoming productions from DJ Wire, Session, Brookes Brothers, Dom Furlonge and Danny Wheeler destined for release on W10.
It is not only Danny’s work in the studio that had led to W10’s rising success, but also his commitment to the label’s ever growing and devoted followers. Launched at Movement in Bar Rumba and at London’s legendary Herbal nightclub, Danny set a trend of throwing explosive label parties which he has continued with a bi-monthly residency at Herbal, now the club’s most popular drum and bass parties (not bad considering he shares the residency with Goldie’s Metal Headz, Hospital Records and Grooverider’s label night).
Since the beginning W10 had been a by-word for drum and bass that crosses musical borders and Danny’s W10 parties are no exception. The W10 sound has received support from hip-hop players and drum and bass artists alike, with residents The Mixologists and godfather of D ‘n’ B Bryan Gee, DJ Krust and Bugz In The Attic - just a few of the diverse artists making regular appearances.
Outside of London, Danny has taken W10 to the Homelands Festival, toured Japan, China, Serbia & Montenegro, Colombia, Switzerland, Spain, Norway and France. Danny also recently launched W10 Records with parties in Venezuela (South America), Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia (Spain), Toulouse (France), Serbia & Montenegro. With infinite support from an industry crying out to hear more from Danny Wheeler and his label, it seems with their roots firmly in West London, the sky really is the limit for W10. He is currently recording with Tugg, the live drummer from Basement Jaxx. Look out for a house project he is working on and many more surprises.
