You might have heard about the full mythical Brazil of beaches, semi naked women dancing samba and small geniuses of 15 years old playing soccer havent you? Porto Alegre, a city located in the extreme south of Brazil, is something a lot different than this. Its European colonization, its climate oscillating between an infernal summer and a frozen winter, without beaches, holds a remarkable urban culture. Instead of a paradise the city has started a raw and plain garage rock.

Walverdes is one of the bands which best represents this scene. Founded in 1993, it soon gained respect in the underground scene due to their intense shows and homemade cassette recordings which blew in tape recorders at the time. For the last 13 years, the band has pressed forward in the independent musical scene of the country and was nation wide recognized. After 6 cassette tapes released, the band recorded 3 albums and 1 EP produced and distributed by independent labels in Brazil.

The discography of Walverdes, as well as its shows, is the best what rock has to offer: The crudity of the rock garage of the 60s, the honesty of punk rock, the irony and the heavy chords of grunge that always take part of it. Bands such as Mudhoney, Deep Purple, The Who, Nirvana, MC5, The Sonics, Rocket FromThe Crypt and Black Sabbath are undeniable influences.

Currently, Walverdes is in its best condition. The last few years, they have toured throughout the country and supported the best Brazilian rock bands and others such as Nebula, Guitar Wolf, Nada Surf, Breeders and Supergrass. Beside the experience, the band still has a lot to offer to the audience interested in a radiated and excellent music that has something meaningful to be expressed . Although this mix may not please everybody, the ones who try and like always want a little more.
