Group Warning Schools About Nearby Sexual Offenders

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A local mother has decided to take a proactive approach when it comes to protecting children from convicted sexual offenders.
The woman, a recovering rape victim and mother to three children, formed Women Against Sexual Predators (WASP) – a group that wants to remove convicted sex offenders who break state law by living within 1000 feet of a school, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.
"I'm tired of being angry about it," she said. "I'm going to do something about it."
Using a Web site that locates sexual offenders, she categorized sexual offenders by the types of crimes they had committed, Tate reported.
Then she wrote letters to more than 100 schools that are located near the addresses registered to offenders.
One of those schools is Ohio Avenue Elementary.
"(It has) 71 (offenders) within a half mile and 9 within 1000 feet," the woman said. "It is a concern. I know the Sheriff's Office has a huge problem keeping up with them. They need more funding and more people."
Until a letter from WASP arrived, officials at Capitol City Academy near downtown Columbus were unaware of the eight registered sex offenders living nearby.
"It is something we have to be aware of and be a good neighbor and help each other out," said Capitol City Academy director Tara VanderWerf –Meyerink.
WASP's founder said she only wants to help authorities protect kids by doing what she can.
"I just want to help," she said. "Mom's and Dads: please start teaching your kids today."

WOW!! I am amazed at the amount of people on myspace who are in the fight against perverts and sex offenders :)
Not only am I working on notifying schools of sex offenders near them, I am working on notifying neighbors of sex offenders. In Ohio the Sheriff's office only notifys neighbors and schools of people classified as habitual offenders or predators that are within 1000 ft of them. I believe in order for children to be safe, parents need to be aware of all offenders close to thier home. Did you know that sex offenders are more likely to reoffend than most other paroled criminals? This problem WILL NOT GO AWAY! We need to be Proactive and not Reactive when it comes to these deviants.

Don’t Wait To Take Action for Prevention
What we do know is that there are people who have abused in our communities, some already identified, some not. Don’t just wait to be notified about someone who has been convicted of a sexual offense. Talk to your family and friends now. Make the sexual safety of children a priority all the time with everyone in your community.
Remember: 88% of sexual abuse is never reported. Authorities can’t notify you about most people who sexually abuse because they’ve never been identified.
Your safety action plans for your family and community are the same whether or not you’ve been notified about someone with an offense in your community. Think about those who may abuse in the same way that you stay aware of possible speeding cars, children in the streets, or drug dealers near your child’s school.
If you know what to look for and how to take action, people who sexually abuse children will not have access to them. Their abusive behavior can be stopped when we are all aware. They can get help to prevent any further abuse.
