In the spring of 2009, Wasteland Jazz Unit joined fellow
Cincinnati-based unit Burning Star Core on a short twelve-show tour,
worming through the Midwestern apple. Every set of the Unit was
recorded, and now presented here in entirety; non-chronological order
across six cassettes -- dueling pairs of fourteen, sixteen, and
eighteen minutes -- to ensure a blank tape minimum. Cincinnati,
Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, Milwaukee, St. Paul, Iowa City,
Evanston, Chicago, St. Louis, Lexington -- through sports bars,
basements, galleries, radio station studios, etc. -- the Wasteland
mission remained the same (http://www.myspace.com/wastelandjazzunit).
Includes the relatively hectic Chicago set, which resulted in a broken
tooth for Robert Beatty during the first-ever encore and "moshpit" for
these boys.

In the first installment of the Ecstatic Jazz Duos series, there is no room for subtlety. On the the Talibam! side, the 18-minute "The Geometric Mophometrics of P.P.P.P.P. McNasticals" (what?!) is a multi-part epic unlike anything else in the New York City duo's recorded output. Matt Motel (synthesizer) and Kevin Shea (drums) run through the cacophonous noise-jazz most of us know them for, but also seamlessly engage in righteously proggy pursuits taking hits off King Crimson and Keith Emerson. On the B-side, Wasteland Jazz Unit gurgles shrapnel on two rippers for amplified saxophone (Jon Lorenz) and clarinet (John Rich). Cincinnati's premier Art Damage skater-jazz crew have recorded with the likes of C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) and Ryan Jewell (Pink Reason, Psychedelic Horseshit), and here deliver an aural abuse that just ruins your day. Edition of 500.

Wasteland Jazz Unit have been sandblasting ears throughout 2008 and it certainly feels like a privilige to kickstart a new WJU year with some of their most putrid Fried Jazz to date. Saxophonist Jon Lorenz and clarinettist John Rich delve deeper into the Great Borbetomagus Saga than anyone else these days but add some extra k’s of Noise crudeness to it to make it sound like freejazz for sewage rat biker gangs. The three tracks on this album feel like huge bolts of reed feedback sandblasting the grease out of your ears. A highlight in their discography so far and, let me quote Jon Lorenz here: “definitely some of the best stuff we've recorded yet”.
