Followed by the long-awaited album Hunger’s The Best Sauce
“This is the most exciting duo this side of Mars.” Coldcut.
“One of the most inspirational bands of our time.” Lisa Stansfield.
SaltPeter are Salena Godden and Peter Coyte: it comes as no surprise that their combined backgrounds, Salena from indigenous Jamaicans and Peter from East End Londoners, would make the strong, identifiable and rebellious sound they do; quintessentially British, very noughties and very naughty London.
With Salena’s spoken word and literary background (her memoir SPRINGFIELD ROAD is due to be published by HarperCollins next Spring) plus her recent collaborations with Ninja Tunes Coldcut, Alabama 3 and Simple Kid, and Peter’s award-winning soundscapes for live performance and theatre, they combine their shared influences of rock, ska, breakbeat and dub (imagine a blend of The Specials, The Blockheads, Ween and Kate Bush); there was no way SaltPeter could be anything but a very unusual, very cerebral union.
Following up on their debut single Everybody Back To Mine, the forthcoming release I’m Not Gay But... is a kick-ass, tongue-in-cheek salute to the current trend of bi-curious ambiguity. It’s sexy, catchy, ska-influenced pop. B-side is the lascivious and salacious Your Wife... (See what we did there? I'm Not Gay But....Your Wife.) And adding a thumbs-up seal of approval is a formidable remix from Ninja Tunes Coldcut. Completing the package is the I’m Not Gay But... dvd, featuring London’s most notorious drag-queen, superstars and superfreaks.
The album Hunger’s The Best Sauce is the belly-rumbling of the skint, the scam, and the walk of shame, the morning after the night before and the fear of the night after that.† Saunter with us through 7-day benders; laugh at one-night stands. It’s the overheard conversation in the pub toilets; it’s a wink and a nudge, slap-and-tickle commentary of London nightlife.

It's another Irregular night with Canongate Books
Thursday, June 18, 2009 8:00pm
The Voodoo Rooms, West Register St, Edinburgh,
This week it's the next instalment of Limbo's mighty Irregular collaborations with Canongate Books, which will feature the Scottish debut of exciting new Mancunian outfit Modernaire, who have already toured as support act for The Ting Tings and remixed MGMT and Empire Of The Sun having hardly released a record, plus magnetic stage poet Salena Godden, renegade young Middlesbrough novelist Richard Milward, and novelist Trevor Byrne launching his phenomenal new book Ghosts and Lightning. Keeping the crowd jumping till the wee hours will be DJs from Tongue’n’Groove, Chocolate City and the Black Spring DJs (Limbo).
There will also be a lot of FREE STUFF flying around on the door, including copies of Canongate's MIGHTY BOOK OF BOOSH and some very exciting mescal flavoured REFRESHMENTS!
MODERNAIRE have hardly released any records yet (their first proper single, Faites Vos Jeux, is out in June) but their material has excited people so much they've already been personally invited by fellow Mancunians The Ting Tings to join them on their UK tour (just as ‘That’s Not My Name’ hit No. 1), sharing stages with luminaries such as current indie-disco darlings Friendly Fires and The Whip, and also remixed pop stars such as MGMT, Metronomy, Empire Of The Sun (which went to no.03 in the Hype Machine chart), Daggers, The Hot Puppies, The Holloways, with Scandinavian punk-funk favourites WhoMadeWho and Love Grenades in the pipeline.
