Working in radio I have come across countless CDRs given to me by friends of some local band that barely exists; a band playing shows to handfuls of people in disorganized venues whose tenure is barely longer than the bands that occupy them. The odd part is that many of these albums are really good; often bearing the flag of the boundary pushing and unique sounds bubbling in Canada.
Inevitably I’ll approach these bands and get them an interview, assist with a mail-out to the press and radio stations, and do my best to give them exposure. Sometimes I’m successful and other times I’m not. But in the process I’ve come to realize that these bands exist in every city, town, and hamlet across Canada. So, the question arose: how do I find this stuff? How do I get in touch with the emerging musical culture in Canada?
