Sounds Like
Who knew look so young you might refuse to sell them a beer but one thing that
became immediately obvious during their first few songs was that they don't need
alcohol to produce an outstanding performance. Mixing some tightly written and
sung lyrics, with obvious vocal influences from Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hand's
Say Yeah and other similarly face-paced falsetto-voiced indie bands, they leapt
about in a manner reminiscent of an early performance by The Libertines but the
memory that remained after closing time was of a series of complicated-yet-catchy
songs that were performed with gusto.
Like a vast number of new Icelandic bands Who Knew also threw in a liberal
smattering of electronica. The keyboard in 'Sharpen the Knife' and the
introduction to 'Wallabe' serve to add structure and depth to what are already
very good tracks. Less, in the case of Who Knew, is definitely more.
'Wallabe', 'Mountains', 'Pagan Revolution', 'Please Don't' and 'Sharpen the
Knife' are a set of songs with genuine longevity - most have enough complexity (listen
to 'Wallabe's gradual progression from keyboard solo to full-blown indie rock or
the layers that build up to a glorious finale on 'Sharpen the Knife') and
ambition to not prove tiresome after a dozen listens yet they're simple enough
to be exposed as great pieces of song writing when performed in the heady manner
of Who Knew. Who'd have known that when they first walked on stage.
The Icelandic indie power pop band WHO KNEW is mixing some tightly written and sung lyrics with tones of energy. The sound is best described as an enthralling mix of American west coast rock, new wave and a dash of sixties-psychedelic. Tight, tuneful, energetic and with just a dash of humor.
WHO KNEW started in winter 2005 in a typical Icelandic garage: “It was really cold when we started playing. The garage wasn’t heated up and the monitors and all the technical stuff was always failing because it was so cold. However that is so typical for Iceland: it is a tough start but it makes you better in the end: You can always play with cold hands.”, remembers Balli, the guitarist, winking.
Unlike other Icelandic bands WHO KNEW isn't capturing the wideness and loneliness of the Icelandic landscape but shows another aspect of its home country and bristles with energy. “A lot of bands are trying to capture deep emotions but we want to mediate happiness which is also an important part of Icelandic culture.”, explains the bass player Jökull.
Certainly it is much easier to write depressive music. “Many people like more to complain than to inspire. We rather like to inspire than to complain.”, adds the singer Ármann.
Besides the catchy melodies and therefore great records the live performance is also one of the band's excellence. Every concert resembles a volcanic eruption and you find yourself dancing, singing or clapping.
After a very successful Germany tour this summer WHO KNEW is perfecting the debut album “bits and pieces of a major spectacle” that will be released in spring 2010.
“I always think of the album like a living creature. Like bits and pieces that we take together and built a certain creature or an animal. So it's like an organic thing.”, adds Balli.
