An underlying darkness permeates through the music of Brisbane indie rockers wind&brackets. Whether it’s in the lyrics, performance & vocal delivery of lead singer Tommy Ivo, the pounding rhythm section, or the wall of sound guitars and organs, it’s something that has given the band a certain substance and pricked up the ears of labels, management, radio and music fans alike.
The band describes their sound as “Like getting hit in the face…but the good kind of getting hit in the face” and whilst individually influenced by different bands such as Arcade Fire, Muse, The Libertines and The Cure they all list classic bands such as Black Sabbath, Nick Cave and Iggy Pop as influence and inspiration.
In the two years since the band’s formation, wind&brackets have independently recorded a three track demo which was posted on myspace and what quickly became favourites at their acclaimed live shows. In August 2007 they recorded a two track single ‘Nu Nu (Za Za)/Words Of Decerabia’ and released it digitally through over 50 e-tailers around the world.
Richard Kingsmill reviewed ‘Nu Nu (Za Za)’ on TripleJ Unearthed giving it 4 stars and promptly added it to rotation on Triple J. So impressed with it, the station also added it to the TripleJ New Music podcast and featured it over two weekends on a JTV/ABC2 special on Unearthed artists. The track also receives continued support from community radio, as well as receiving spins on influential Los Angeles radio stations KCRW (Nic Harcourt) & Indie 103.1 (Sat Bisla).
wind&brackets have been a regular fixture on the Brisbane live scene, headlining a number of shows including a successful EP launch at The Zoo. They have also played shows in Sydney & Melbourne and shared the stage with bands such as Faker, Art Brut (UK), The Cops, Yves Klein Blue, Damn Arms, PaperScissors, Plug-In City, Sparkadia, The E.L.F. and more. The five piece have just won the Qld heats and are finalists in the Garage 2 V Festival competition, which if won, will see them perform at the V Festivals around the country.
For their latest EP, wind&brackets enlisted the help of ARIA award winning producer Magoo, recording at the Blackbox and Applewood studios. The new songs are amazing, showing a diverse, confident and truly international sound not usually seen in young Australian bands. The as yet unsigned EP titled ‘Fire In The Ocean’, is slated for a CD/Digital release in April/May.
“…the general excitement in the air while wind&brackets are playing is intense…”
