   About windings
Windings (a brief history of…)

In 2005, windings eponymous debut album was released on Out On A Limb Records. Recorded in fits and bursts over a four year period, "windings" was finally whittled down to 14 songs. All songs were written and performed by Steve Ryan, along with a little help from some of his friends. Everything about the album, its artwork, its compositions and its recording, is positively home grown. "windings" flits from lo-fi acoustic melodies to Scuzzy rock, from woozy instrumentals to ambient electronic pieces, from pure pop to dirgy almost-metal, all of which makes for a truly original and invigorating listening experience.

Then to 2008… windings has now welcomed Liam Marley into the fold. Liam brings his multi-instrumentalism and songwriting skills along with him, thus augmenting the sound of windings somewhat. All for the greater good mind! An album’s worth of material had been recorded in 2007, which is now ditched. Recording begins again in earnest throughout 2008, now including songs co-written by Steve and Liam. Windings is no longer a “solo project”

So what've they been up to since then? Well, They’ve mostly been honing (yes, "honing) their live show, which depending on the night you catch them, could be stripped down acoustic melancholia, or beefed up distorted electric rock from hell (kind of). Over the past few years, windings have had the pleasure of playing with the likes of Daniel Johnston, Smog/Bill Callahan, The Handsome Family, Bob Mould, Malcolm Middleton, Okkervil River, Jape, Caribou, Tom McRae, Iron And Wine, Villagers, and Duke Special, amongst others.

2009! In another new mutation, a further two members have been added to the windings fold. Aaron Mulhall has taken on drum duties, while Ivan Pawle has been rendered organist/bassist/whateverist. 4 piece band ensues, new album (recorded by Tommy McLaughlin-Villagers, giveamanakick, Cathy Davey) is finally recorded, mixed, mastered, and will be released early 2009. Stay tuned to www.myspace.com/windings for updates!!!

Thanks Steve,
I really like your songs myself.
Especially the song with the 'red-haired stepdaughter' lyric you played towards the end.
It raised a smile!

Firstly, apologies for this generic single spam.

'Kimberly' can be downloaded straight to media enabled phones by texting 'music 3919 M' to 57501 - note the spaces!

For all other phones they've made it more awkward. Text 'music 3919' to 57501 and then log onto www.downloadmusic.ie with your UNIQUE code to download it from the site. Hands up who loves technology.

If you're in Kilkenny you can buy the hard copy from Hearbeat city and Rollercoaster, or if you're in Dublin you'll find it in Tower Records.

All support in keeping us off the dole and stopping us stealing your taxes is greatly appreciated in the matter. See you in a town near you soon.

All the best from The River Valley Band.

under the stars
just gaze and listen..

the silence is loud
as the moon light
glistens

you feel the peace
hear a whisper
not the wind
your intuition..

you feel the goodness
deep down your soul..

God gave you the stars
to rock and roll

so every night
under one bright
star
say a blessing
be thankful
who you are.
