In 2005, windings eponymous debut album was released on Out On A Limb Records. Recorded in fits and bursts over a four year period, "windings" was finally whittled down to 14 songs. All songs were written and performed by Steve Ryan (giveamanakick/tooth) along with a little help from some of his friends. Everything about the album, its artwork, its compositions and its recording, is positively home grown. "windings" flits from lo-fi acoustic melodies to Scuzzy rock, from woozy instrumentals to ambient electronic pieces, from pure pop to dirgy almost-metal, all of which makes for a truly original and invigorating listening experience.
Back to 2008… windings has now welcomed Liam Marley into the fold. Liam brings his multi-instrumentalism and songwriting skills along with him, thus augmenting the sound of windings somewhat. All for the greater good mind! An album’s worth of material had been recorded in 2007, which is now ditched. Recording begins again in earnest throughout 2008, now including songs co-written by Steve and Liam. Windings is no longer a “solo project”
Since the release of “windings” in 2005, and considering that it took 4 years to record and get that out, windings are “getting there” in the recording of this new one. They’ve mostly been honing their live show, which depending on the night you catch them, could be stripped down acoustic melancholia, or beefed up distorted electric rock from hell (kind of). You may take your chances, but you will always win, my friend…
So, over the past few years, windings have had the pleasure of playing with the likes of Daniel Johnston, Smog, The Handsome Family, Bob Mould, Malcolm Middleton, Okerville River, Jape, Caribou, Iron And Wine, Duke Special and Buck 65, amongst others.
They are hoping to have this new record finished “soon”.
