About World Unity Jazz Ensemble/Phil Morrison Trio
The almost human vocal quality of the Chinese violin called the "erhu" (ahr-hoo) exudes a hauntingly beautiful sound rarely heard within a jazz context. The emphasis of this music is on the melody of each song, performed in such a way that the beauty of every note is captured and savored.
Combine this traditional Chinese instrument with the Duke Ellington classic melody "Prelude To A Kiss" over a jazz rhythm section... then sprinkle it with Latin percussion... voila! ...a true representation of international harmony!
Jiebing Chen, who is featured playing the erhu, is considered to be one of the world's greatest performers on that instrument. A graduate of The Shanghai Conservatory, Ms. Chen is no stranger to jazz. She was an integral part of The Beijing Trio which featured legendary jazz drummer, Max Roach, and has recorded and performed with the world famous banjo artist, Bela Fleck.
The co-founders of WUJE (woo-jay), Phil Morrison and Keith Williams have for over ten years performed in and written music related to Asia, primarily China and Japan. Their "China Skies" CD represents the unique writing and arranging skills necessary to capture the flavor of Asia. It was recorded in China, Japan, and the USA. In this new project, it is particularly noteworthy that three of the originals are assumed to be traditional melodies from China but they are actually melodies written by Phil or Keith.
Keith Williams, a graduate of the renowned Berklee College of Music, is the musical director and orchestrator of the music, while Phil Morrison is the primary organizer and composer of much of their original material.
Given the current climate of worldwide discord that affects us all, we offer this unique musical presentation as an example of "international harmony" which most of us long for. Jazz has always been a unifying force and WUJE would like to carry on this tradition as exemplified by the great Dizzy Gillespie. Both Phil and Keith performed with Dizzy Gillespie and were deeply moved by his love and concern for humanity. Diz would take his band around the world incorporating in that band peoples and rhythms from many nations and cultures. The spirit of Diz lives... and with our music, we hope to keep it alive.

Hello, Thank you! Happy Mother's Day! For beauty being the best of all we know. Imagination stakes out heavenly claims,Nor is there fairer work for beauty found From all the woes that in the world abound; If from man's greater need beauty redound. May your weekend be imaginative where Beauty abounds! XX~
For beauty being the best of all we know
For beauty being the best of all we know Sums up the unsearchable and secret aims Of nature, and on joys whose earthly names Were never told can form and sense bestow; And man has sped his instinct to outgo The step of science; and against her shames Imagination stakes out heavenly claims, Building a tower above the head of woe. Nor is there fairer work for beauty found Than that she win in nature her release From all the woes that in the world abound; Nay with his sorrow may his love increase, If from man's greater need beauty redound, And claim his tears for homage of his peace. by Robert Bridges

Every time that we listen or write music... play an instrument... dance... act in a play... or work in some audio/image/video engineering process... Something is healing inside...
When we share it with friends... Something is healing all over...
so this is where you are staying for the Olympics?! i know i don't have to remind you to have a great time!
Plenty of new hotels will be popping up in Beijing ahead of the Olympic Games, but few will be quite as special as the Hilton Beijing Wangfujing, a 225-room property in the historical heart of China's capital city. Stay here and you're within walking distance of Tiananmen Square and the hotel actually overlooks the Forbidden City. It also boasts the first Macanese Restaurant in Beijing and all rooms have a whopping 42" plasma TV.
Hey guys!! I have enjoyed working with you guys! You are great! Sorry that we weren't able to get together! You can always catch me on the cell instead of the house! Hopefully we'll get to do some work in the near future soon!! "E" NSP NSP NSP!!!!
hey phil/keith, you guys sounded great at jazz in the park last sunday. i didn't catch the whole thing, but i was lucky enough to hear you play a composition (of which the name escapes me now) written by phil for his grandaughter- anyway, i can't get the bridge melody out of my head!
