1) WORMFOOD - London based live music night. Wrigglin all over the common ground between live music, lyricism, African music and dance music, Wormfood puts on stonkin, good vibe parties for good vibe people. Wormfood parties are based at Passing Clouds in Dalston. We also co-programme Valley of the Antics at Secret Garden Party, Antic Banquet and, coming soon, the 'African Rootmaster' programme as part of Continental Drifts 'GLOBAL LOCAL' festival stage.
2) The WORM - Describing themselves as '21st century mali-reggae-garage', the Worm draw on a diverse range of influence to create a fresh, danceable, original 21st century sound.
Combining the shuffly rhythms of UK garage with the sweet melodic riffs and poly-rhythms of West Africa, mixed with original songs and raps in English, jazz, reggae and classical flavours, the Worm have a truly unique sound.
Part of their distinct style comes from their unusual lineup: a violin plucked in the style of a Malian lute (ngoni), bougarabous (tuned African congas), djembe and calabash (gourd percussion), beatbox and sung vocal basslines using Boss Rc50 Loopstation; jazz vocals, reggae falsetto, and poetic raps.
The WORM use these instruments to tell bright, accessible lyrical stories, with diverse subject matter ranging from the Sperm Race (The Race) through the magical power of music to Love, freelancing, reworking of nursery rhymes and childish songs(Piggies, Telephone) to the self-conscious sleaze of Oi You Coy Girl.
Having played their first gig at the first Wormfood at Bethnal Green Working Men's Club in November 07, as a 6-piece band, they decided on an inspirational trip to Mali in Jan 08 to use a loop pedal for a pared down sound, and the Worm in it's present configuration - Max Baillie, Andre Marmot, Niccie Simpson plus loop pedal - was born in March 2008. Since that time they have had the privilege of playing some of the UKs best festivals and venues, including Secret Garden Party, Bestival, Cargo, SE1 Arches, Notting Hill Arts Club, Replay, Wychwood, Small World, Firegathering, Antic Banquet and many more.
After releasing their 'Dust of the New EP' (the project out of which the live band was born) on their own 21st Century Villagist label (C21V) in December 07, produced by Atlay, they have been working since May 08 on the full length 'Writhing and Wriggling' album, produced by Lee Sparey and Attab Haddad, and due for release in the first week of June 2009.
***** "The Worm are Festival, with a capital F, distilled...You can't really critique that sort of thing - it's not about anything but feeling good" - musicOMH.com, review of THE WORM at Secret Garden Party 2008 ****
