About me:
OX4's swirliest get the spotlight this week. Pulling influences from The Smiths, Stone Roses, The Stooges, My Bloody Valentine, and Dinosaur Jr, Ride would go on to define the newly stated 'shoegaze' sound of the early 90s. Sharing stage and musical likeness with contemporaries Lush, Pale Saints, Boo Radleys and Charlatans UK, they signed to Creation Records in 1989 and quickly released landmark shoegaze albums Nowhere, Going Blank Again and the stunning Today Forever EP. The mid-90s cusp of Britpop saw Ride abandon their spacey style for a more conventional rock sound until finally disbanding in 1996. A brief reunion in 2002 gave way to their last original recording Coming Up For Air, a 31 minute long instrumental tribute to Sonic Youth.
In the end they released 4 albums, 15 EP/singles and several compilations. We'll spend 30 minutes focusing on the early Ride years, 1989-1993.

Every Friday at 6PM, WZBC presents Test Pattern - a one hour spotlight on a band, label, genre, or theme as hosted by a different ZBC DJ each week. This Friday, Flyweight host, Ravioli features a retrospective of the (sadly) defunct Too Pure Records.
Formed in London in 1990, Too Pure became an instant super-indie giving the world PJ Harvey, Stereolab, Moonshake, Th Faith Healers, Mouse on Mars, Electrelane, Laika, Seefeel, McClusky, Pram, Long Fin Killie, Hefner, Seely, Scout Niblett, Voodoo Queens and more. The label was ultimately absorbed by 4AD Records last year, though they still operate a singles club. We'll try to squeeze many songs as we focus on the early days of the label.
