"Are you going to make us sound good then?" Asks Kevin. I'll do what I can...
Yeah Sparrow garner the appreciation and support of audiences wherever they play, often being described as the UK music scene's best kept secret, people take the music to their hearts as an old friend. The frontman of the group, Kevin, has been playing an equal amount of solo and band shows in various locations across the UK, with a brief sojourn to Australia earlier this year. He describes the project - "we're trying to communicate to a part of the soul where logic and emotion meet, the place that science maps and psychology describes. Its not something I'm clever enough to put directly into words, and that's the role of art anyway I reckon, but that's the target. It sounds pretentious, but that's how I see it anyway. I also like the idea of music being a confidante, a friend that you can share an inner experience with, but you might not talk to anyone else about".
Kevin is fond of talking abstractly, because that's the way he seems to think. He's "always written little ditties and doodled with pencil and words", and for him "making and experiencing as many forms of the arts as possible has always been my secret religion". He's being modest. He's got hundreds of songs under his belt, folders and folders of drawings, short stories, essays, thoughts and scribblings that I've only been allowed a brief glimpse at, worked as an editor, performed as an actor on film and on the stage and formally he studied Philosophy, Psychology and Film at university.
However he sees it or himself, the outcome is a collection of songs that on recordings, and my experience of their live performances, have elements of pop, of folk, of art-rock, indie-rock, blues, bluegrass... which fit together as a cozy vehicle for the insightful lyrics of songwriters delving to the meaning and significance of their own worldly experiences.
The three members of Yeah Sparrow have been renting a small room on industrial ground in Brixton, South London since 2007 and have been developing and recording the sound of Yeah Sparrow, amongst other projects. Both Dave Mackie and Christoph Bauschinger have a background in film; Dave in effects editing and Christoph in soundtrack composition. Having worked in these environments, they were able to fix something concrete to anchor Kevin's abstract wanderings, and the threesome put together a portfolio of songs that excite, entertain and sometimes move audiences to tears. They took the show to Latitude festival a month ago, playing four slots on two stages, and collected more devoted fans and internet murmurings along the way.
Led by Dave Mackie, Yeah Sparrow also play as ironic neo-grunge band "Love Song In Disguise", pioneering a sound they call 'nurge', which is defined as a combination between need and urge...
So my advice to you would be to hook up with these guys if you get the chance, you'll gain a friend, and an endlessly rewarding new addition to your permanent music collection.
"I like your music, Kev. Quite often your songs come on shuffle and I leave them on".
