   About Matthew Young

These songs are the last recordings of my cousin, Matthew Todd Young who passed away recently.
He lived Nov 20, 1975 through Apr 21, 2005.
He would have been thirty years old this year. It is enough to say that he was way too young.

Matthew was a passionate musician. He lived, breathed and slept music. He and I (  www.myspace.com/dustyoday  ) have been a rhythm section since 1992, when we first began jamming together. We played in several groups and venues in Galveston and Houston. Matt made quite a contribution to the music scene here. He was always about the groove...

He was also about to graduate from COM with an associates in Communications, and was planning to follow up at U of H to get his bachelors. The acceptance letter and a note telling him he could participate in graduation are still sitting on his desk.
Matt was always down to help people. He had a way with children and the elderly, from his medical experience. Matt worked in home health care, and was a certified paramedic. He went on mission trips to Mexico and Belize and while in Mexico, he delivered a baby. The family named the baby “Matthew”, after him. He was a scuba diver, and an artist who loved to paint. But above all, his passion was music

The last gig we played together was at the Balinese room in Galveston, a venue we played many times. Matt was always down to play drums on short notice. Sadly, the band split up and the Balinese gig ended up being our last venue. We had a lot of good times there.

Rest Easy Matthew...

Your music lives on in my heart...

I miss you so much Matthew. You were the opposite of everything I was and you totally completed me. My life will never be the same without you. You showed me so much in life in such a short period of time. I will never forget our weekend in Austin ( I still have the key to the room and the white robes we took of the cleaning ladys cart...). You always made me laugh, and held me when I cried. No one in this world could ever replace the part of my heart that was taken away when you left. RIP my dearest Matthew...I love you so much.

I remember driving in my Bug to the Houston Museum of Natural Science--it was the first time I'd ever been on an "intellectual" date like that. One of the best days of my life. I introduced Matt to the world of 311, he had me listening to Jane's Addiction. We would share stories about body piercings and church camp. Matt, you will not be forgotten. ♥D♥

I was also lucky enough to know Matt. I remember back in 94 or 95 he was in one of my Psych classes at C.O.M. and I remember him coming to school with no shoes on, and I said to myself, "Self, you need to get to know him, I bet he has a lot of interesting things to talk about". And sure enough, he did. Matt was such a compassionate person, also friendly and eager to learn new things. Most recently, I got to spend a semester with him in Tae Kwon Do class. He challenged me to a match and I had to take him down, even though he said he let me win because I was a girl. I wasn't gonna argue with that...Man, I miss him. R.I.P Matt. We're all thinking about you and miss you.

OK...so here's a funny story about Matt that his drum instructor shared with me the other day when I was dropping Connor off at lessons...Matt had taken a break from drum lessons as he did every so often, so Bob hadn't seen him in a while. One day Bob was at Mall of the Mainland and he looked up and saw this really homely looking girl with long, stringy hair walking toward him. He thinks, "man that girl looks familiar...man, she's REALLY homely"...as she approached him with that familiar grin and said hello, he realized it was Matt...in a kilt...said he'll always remember that and smile...

Know that your drums are in good keeping...Lonny is going to set them up and Connor will study under the same instructor who taught you so many years ago...your beat lives on...your illgotten Shiner Bock poster and a drawing you gave me when you were just a teenager will hang behind them in homage to your life and the continued presence of your spirit. Love/miss you...Lori

"Matt the Brat" - You were a cousin, but like a younger brother to me throughout your years. I tortured you as a child (made you tough!) and helped "raise" you and Dusty through your teens and early 20's...quite the daunting task, because (unlike the mom's) I knew what you guys were REALLY up to. We sailed the seas of cheese. I love you and I know you now have the peace you always sought on this earth. Love, Lori

Little known fact about Matt: In the mid-90's Matthew and I created a weekly children's music time for kids when our families were attending Mainland Community Church. Matt on bongos; me on piano. When he went to Mexico on his mission trip, he picked up various instruments for the kids to play and join in (shakers, etc.). It was a beautiful time.
