So monk have ventured into their third album
and are setting sails to new territories . . .
The crew stays the same, the charts are new.
The mainland is disappearing on the horizon
and you rely on your instincts.
Organicly, homogenicly, yet in a slightly weird way
the tracks seem to sneak into the unpoised
listener’s ears and straight down to the gut.
There are nine (ten?) songs on the Longplayer
and each one is telling a small part
of a bigger story, the story of a restless search,
a journey.
‘The Man Who Sleeps On His Breath’ that is the name
Native Americans gave to one of the first photographers
who captured their life and culture on camera.
On his ventures he used to sleep on an air-mattress . . .
So now we find this symbol of restlessness on
monk’s album-cover .
The three of them, Philipp Pluhar, Susanna Sawoff and
Georg Hartwig tell stories of Leaving, of Breaking-Away,
of Coming-Home and of Staying.
The stormy personal relationships during the making
of the album had a huge bearing on the outcome.
The arrangements, the lyrics, the songwriting, they
all ‘fell victim’ of these turmoils, in a good way.
Guitars break up the fragile compositions and spit
in the gaps, horn-sections do their bit and counterpoint
the chiseled lyrics. The whole vessel seems to
be going a just a little faster than it should.
But as we cannot get off a ship like we’re on a bus,
we might as well enjoy the ride and be content
to know, that one day we’ll get there . . .
