i am sometimes compared to zappa & i like a lot of his stuff. the difference between me & him is that he was a dadaist, which is about absurdity & meaninglessness & i am more of an american surrealist & symbolist--wacky for sure, but meaningful (although my lyrics can be as cryptic to me as to everybody else. it's like dream interpretation). there aren't that many pop composers like me who are influenced by modern classical composers like zappa was so there aren't that many to compare me to. i got the idea that music could effect timespace from messiaen's "quartet for the end of time." i like to go outside of conventional harmony because my idea is that if you are going to explore futuristic themes then your music should sound like it, it shouldn't be ordinary. most people tell me i don't really sound like anybody else. some ask where such ideas come from. some say "wow, that's really creative, fresh & unique" & some say "that's too weird, i don't get it." whatever. i'm sick of mind-numbing drivel, i'd personally rather hear something like i've never heard before. i'm tired of mediocre people putting down talented people by calling them weird. it's about creativity. i've learned a lot from other artists, though.
some of the elements that go into my sound are: the original pioneering electronic music, electroacoustic music & music concrete by people like varese, stockhausen & xenakis, the way steve reich combines digital sampling with tight composing, the way debussy & his followers liberated us from conformity to tonic/dominant harmony, the use of natural sounds like in rautavaara's "concerto for birds & orchestra," guitar feedback & space rock like pink floyd's "saucerful of secrets" & "echoes," atmospheric trip hop, sampledelia & spacy rap like massive attack, dj shadow & kool keith, the big beat electronica of meat beat manifesto, the chemical brothers & fatboy slim, the way the doors mixed poetry & music, the way bjork combines classical & electronic music, the joyful funk of james brown & prince & the urban grooves of modern r&b, the lyrical excellence of beck, early/mid steely dan & "strawberry/walrus" period lennon, the wacked-out comedy of firesign theatre, the spirituality of great composers from bach to arvo part, the zappa-like quick shifts of style, the goofy 80's party-nerd spirit of devo, b-52's & talking heads, the performance art of laurie anderson, classic audio artists like ken nordine & lord buckley & the way schubert thru-composed poem settings.
my literary influences are virtual-reality type science fiction like that of philip k dick, the literature of the new fabulists like jonathan carroll & neil gaiman, the cyberpunk of william gibson & neal stephenson, transdimensional fantasy & fairy tales like c. s. lewis'"perelandra," lovecraft's "dream quest" & lewis carroll's "alice through the lookng glass," the poetry of the french symbolists & american surrealists. i show my pop culture influences in some of the cover tunes i do, stuff like "texas radio" by the doors & "they're coming to take me away ha ha" by napoleon XIV, songs with rap vocals from before hip-hop came along. i'm certainly not a rapper or a political-rant slam poet. thank you for not boring me with political evangelizing. everything else is just falling in love with space chicks & trying to keep the bleepnids from bringing me down.

zed mizar is an electronic composer/musician & performance poet. he came out of the thriving lunar club scene @ tranquility base dome city that arose in the early 2170s during the turmoil of the clone rebellion. the cosmic cosmopolitan club scene on luna, where creative exiles like mizar hung out with neptune chicks, mutant cyborgs & ethereal beings from the quasar zone, sparked a cross-pollination of ideas that warped beyond the corporate mind control sattelites operated by the hyperdimensional demons, who were well entrenched in the stock market. mizar used a mathematical composing technique based on superstring hyperspace physics that caused a sonic warping of timespace, often slowing time & counteracting gravity. clocks often melted & skirts were uplifted. he toured the crystal dome circuit thru the asteroids with his cyborg band, the bolshevik shysters, which included the legendary 8-armed drummer roto octoshok & rubber-limbed guitarist gumby limbo. they were the house band @ the zoltronn club on ganymede, playing for hardcore shockheads & methane-sniffers from the ice moons.
the shysters recorded their first hit single, "lament of a hapless earthling," an atonal blues about spaceport alienation & surreal culture clash, which caught on around the solar system. tours of alpha centauri & beta cygni soon followed in the wake of their second hit, "return of the howling fiends from oblivion pt. 2," which helped spark the bogsnacker uprisings against the bleepnids on the crystalline frost clouds of miranda. mizar's music was labeled "retrotech" by the critics because it flew in the face of the trendy "pink noise mush" sound popular at the time with the vat-grown clones & especially with the sex robots from the suburban cheese moons of bliptorr. there were numerous attempts on his life by technowitches & their clone lackeys for defying the blanket of conformity decreed on earth after the pseudo-humanoid takeover, but he always slipped away like a wisp of vapor, seemingly under the protection of galactic archangels. after the release of the seminal "chickenhead bandersnatch" in 2196, recorded on equipment salvaged from the wreck of a 1985 volkswagen, he disappeared completely & was rumored to have escaped by traveling back in time to early 21st century los angeles, where he worked with venusian & neptunian allies to create an alternate future timeline in which the pseudo-humanoid takeover never happens. they did this using the creative power of music & poetry.--ignatz gnarrl, sound cyclopedia, 2210.
