Musicians’ letter to Obama: Peter Gabriel leads music industry call for the President to ban music torture in his July 21 review of US interrogation policy.

Musician and human rights campaigner Peter Gabriel has today written to President Obama requesting an explicit ban on the use of music by US military interrogators.

The letter is co-signed by the Musicians Union and UK Music and supported by artists including Dizzee Rascal, Graham Coxon and Doves.

Victims of music torture are subjected to deafening music played for hours, days and months on end in order to ‘break’ them. Such techniques are currently used by the US military to destroy victims psychologically; the long-term damage is often far more devastating than physical injury.

President Obama’s official review of US interrogation techniques will conclude next Tuesday 21st July, and the Administration will amend the US Army Field Manual – which prescribes permitted techniques – accordingly.

“We are, of course, against all forms of torture, but as musicians we are particularly concerned about the misuse of music and that this practice may slip under the radar unless you explicitly condemn it,” Peter Gabriel writes to the President in today’s letter.

“The practice is an abuse of our rights as well as, of course, those of the prisoners who are subjected to it.

“We ask you to send a clear message and explicitly outlaw the use of music to ‘break’ and interrogate prisoners.”

Clive Stafford Smith, Director of Reprieve, said today: “Blasting prisoners with ear-splitting music 24/7 is a form of modern torture. Yet because this technique leaves no visible scars, there is a real chance that President Obama will consider it harmless. It is not. It causes severe psychiatric problems, the devastating effects of which can last a lifetime.

“It is a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions, and an affront to musicians everywhere.

Reprieve is against all forms of torture.

President Obama is currently reviewing permitted interrogation techniques for the US Military. As a result of this review he will almost certainly ban waterboarding and more well-known, widely condemned techniques.

It is less clear what he will do about ‘no touch’ psychological torture methods, which are currently permitted and used in US prisons around the world. The Military argues that such methods are necessary and there has been little protest from the public or Congress about them.

zerodB aims to show that ‘no touch’ techniques are torture, just like water-boarding, and must be explicitly banned.

Only the sickest governments allow this to happen.

Anyone that loves music is going to be particularly concerned at it's cynical and diabolical misuse as an instrument of torture. All torture should be stopped but there are organistations you can join which combat all forms of torture such as Amnesty International which I am also a member of. Localised and narrower campaigns can help to highlight some of the more shocking techniques so bringing the larger issue into public view. There are probably many more forms of this barbarism going on in the world which we don't know about. I welcome and support any campaign which brings any aspect of torture practice to my attention. Before this, I had no idea that 'music torture' was actually in use.  Supporting this campaign is a small step to tackling the wider misuse of all types of coercion, force and physical abuse being carried out in prisons and detention centres around the world. Total support!!!

    Stop all torture now!
  • Jun 26 2009 10:37 AM

Fully support the cause here!! Keep it real!
  • Jun 25 2009 7:25 PM

Absolutely we should all support the end of all torture.

However this particular form has the 'virtue' of being especially attention getting and does actually involve copyright issues. The US military used private intellectual property to inflict torture without the owners' permission.

Musical taste notwithstanding, every little bit of attention is a little more than it got before. Now y'all know what this is, and that makes this campaign successful already.

  • Jun 25 2009 7:13 PM

I agree with the guy below, it's a good cause and all, but shouldn't we be campaigning to end all torture?

What's the fucking point of ending one form if all the others still exist?

Anyone that supports this cause should equally support the end of every single other form of torture. It isn't about your music being misused, it's about people being tortured, I think some people are forgetting that.
  • Jun 25 2009 4:57 PM

Hi, this is the first time I have heard about 'music torture'. At first I thought it was going to have an affiliation with copyright laws but this time I was wrong.

There are many ways to torture someone, and sound is just one of them. Why should I support such a small cause when there are clearly more important, less inclusive issues surrounding the world?

The ironic part of this campaign is that Dizzie Rascal's music in itself has the ability to torture innocent civilians, or turn them into arrogant thugs. Campaign about that instead, it might actually make a difference.

Dizzee Rascal takes a vow of silence to stop musical torture? Sounds about right... but it's when he breaks his vow of silence the musical torture begins.... on a serious note good cause!
  • Jun 25 2009 12:59 AM

Any type of torture is wrong, but to use music as a form of torture? We are all in full support of this, it must be stopped.
