    adams rib, initially began in 1996, as a concept in the basement studio of founding member Derek Lathrop in Mississauga, Ontario. A recent graduate from Humber College’s renowned Music Program, Derek was a talented multi-instrumentalist, producer/engineer looking for a new outlet for his musical endeavors as a singer/songwriter. His experience in numerous musical projects inspired the idea to form a collective - a musical environment where he could play and record his music, drawing from the plethora of musical talent in his surrounding area, without being tied down by the baggage that can come with being in a “band”. The resulting "SCENES FROM A CORNER STORE" was produced, engineered, written, and performed by Derek with guest appearances by a long list of local musiciains (a.k.a. his friends) and released independently in 1998. Derek assembled a band of friends and spent the next two years in a series of cross-Canada tours, T.V. and radio appearances, festival dates, and more than a few insanely wild gatherings with the fans adams rib made. “The baby years of adams rib touring history were riddled with some really insane adventures. It would make a great book. Maybe someday I’ll write it all down”, says Derek. During the next few years Derek was prolific and wrote incessantly on the road. Many of the songs would find their way onto to subsequent releases: NEVADA (1999), HOLLOW BODIES (2000), FOREVER CAFÉ (2001) and PUSHING FORWARD LOOKING BACK (2003). Along with the music, Derek produced a number of adams rib videos which can be found at www.youtube.com/adamsribvideo . Many of which have been featured on a variety of T.V. programs. adams rib continued touring Canada and a twist of fate took them “on the water” in 2001. This change resulted in adams rib spending the winter months performing on Cruise Ships around the world, which greatly affected the bands sound. During breaks they toured and added appearances at Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto with SANTANA, STING, STEVIE NICKS, GOO GOO DOLLS and COUNTING CROWS to festival dates with LOVERBOY, JUDAS PRIEST and NICKELBACK. Then came "BLUE" (2007), a work-in-progress since September 2003. “I wanted the songs to come together naturally. Doing a lot of the work at home enabled me to really take my time and hone the songs”, Derek explains. BLUE was recorded in a variety of locations in Southern Ontario, with the help of Derek’s longtime musical friends Chris MacNeil (drums), Curtis Freeman (bass), and Tamara Allers (keyboards). BLUE marked the first time someone other than Derek sat in the producer’s chair. Dan Brodbeck (Holly McNarland, Deloris O’Riordan, CRANBERRIES) produced two tracks including the good time, laid-back reggae vibed “High” which entered the Canadian top 200 in 2007. 2008 began with the release of the second single "water" from the "Blue" CD which charted in markets across Canada. Derek also finished producing the first spanish adams rib recording at the same time. The new compilation was entitled "perdido en traduccion". Which means "lost in translation". The songs were selected and translated from the adams rib back catalogue. Derek also wrote two new songs in spanish for this release. adams rib released this recording in online in May of 2008. With the ever changing market Derek planed to change the adams rib approach to releasing music by embracing the digital release format. Which brings us to September of 2008 when Derek and touring band members Dave Buland (bass) , Bruce McCarthy (drums) and long time collaborator Peter Grant (guitar), set out to try to capture the essence of a live adams rib show. The end result after a quick week of recording was the adams rib offering "FREE MUSIC". The recording was produced and engineered by Derek in his home studio at Derek's. "We wanted to capture the spirit of our live show so we played the tracks live off the floor. We also tried to capture the variety of musical styles we tackle in an adams rib show", says Derek. Thus reflected in the recordings diverse musical offerings drawing from folk, latino, reggae, funk and rock elements. "We spent a lot of time working these songs on the road before recording them", says Derek. The recording was released online in October 2008 and in the spirit of the recordings title “FREE MUSIC” adams rib gave away the music for free, utilizing the various adams rib websites. February 2009 saw adams rib perform for the first time in Chile the country in which Derek was born. The show was at the famous Renaca Beach in Vina del Mar. adams rib was promoting the new spanish recording which was very well received. adams rib came back to Canada to spend the spring, summer and fall of the year touring Canada. More media more T.V. more gigs more parties. "No such thing as having too much fun" has become a band modo. 2009 saw Sam Sino (drums) and Marcus Walker (bass) enter the fold for some touring and recording. The recording session entitled "after august", was the result of that collaboration. Much like free music the songs were mostly honed on the road and then recorded in Derek's home studio. The recording was released online in November of 2010. 2011 marks the 14th anniversary of adams rib. To commemorate the band will kick off a national tour of Canada in April. A new online store has been set up to meet the demands of the fans. adams rib will also press a limited edition 14th anniversary CD which will include the bands entire catalogue in mp3 format as well as the bands entire video catalogue. This compilation will only be available at live shows. Keep an eye on the web for more developments as adams rib makes its way around the world. "Passionate, driving, and very personal", is what EYE MAGAZINE in Toronto has said about the band.
