NEW PROJECT FOR 2009
Adriano Adewale: Sound Journey
Produced by Segue in assocation with the Lakeside Theatre Colchester
Created and performed by Adriano Adewale, Sound Journey is a solo work which uses percussion, voice and dance to explore its core contemporary themes. The piece speaks to and about our current concerns of cultural identity, immigration, migration and climate change employing conventional, traditional, organic and experimental instruments, which are redolent of both rootedness and migration (for example the Berimbau, an instrument taken from Africa to Brazil by Angolan slaves) and played with specific techniques, to create a “sound architecture”. Combining music, theatre and dance in an innovative and unique way, join the master percussionist’s remarkable journey from Africa to South America, desert to rain forest, village to city. A virtuoso, moving and intimate performance appealing directly to the senses!
See Sound Journey at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 7-23 August 2009 at Augustine's Sanctuary (Venue 152).

REVIEW Adriano Adewale Group
Adriano Adewale’s Quartet blending jazz, African and Brazilian elements amazed the audience at Pizza Express on Wednesday, 17 September launching their debut album Sementes. Produced by Gilad Atzmon, this album is due for release on 22 September.
With Adewale as the percussionist, vocalist and composer, the band included Kadialy Kouyate playing on kora and vocals, Nathan Thomson as the double bass and flute player and Marcelo Andrade on the flute, saxophone and violin and guest performers, Gilad Atzmon and Antonio Forcione. The live performance offered a tantalising glimpse into Sementes.
Atmospheric and restorative, the music evoked natural sounds such as the rattling of snakes and the trickling of rain. As the frontman, Adewale gave an extraordinary performance. Fanatical about music, he sang and handled his instruments with rapture. The melancholy song ‘Family Album’ expresses the yearning for one’s homeland featuring intense singing by Adewale. Beginning calmly, ‘Domingo’ then explodes into a dramatic crescendo. ‘Passa por Mim’ is a Samba-influenced track played on recycled instruments. Throughout the performance, the quartet used the African percussion piano kalimba to intensify the authentic sound.
Following this superb debut gig, Adewale and his band will next perform at the Trestle Arts Base in St Albans on 9 October, the ArtsFest Stowe School in Buckingham on 14 October and the Quay Arts Newport on the Isle of Wight on 18 October.

"There are no theme-and-solos cliches, only creative originals, dipping into different traditions to make something eclectic, bright and distinctive. The vibe is exhilarating." **** Manchester Evening News
“…Sementes benefits from a loose, folky, jazz feel and nuances that separate it from your average world groove recording.” *** Jazzwise
“Music starts and finishes with silence. From beginning to end there is much to be seen and experienced. Our music varies in shape, weight and colour. It takes you on a journey where sounds uncover intrinsic identities of simplicity and beauty, translating images, words and movement into music.” – Adriano Adewale.

Adriano Adewale was born in Sao Paulo – Brazil.
For many years he was known as Adriano Pinto, a colonial name he received at birth. It was after his visit to Africa (Nigeria and Benin Republic) searching for his roots that he changed his name to Adriano Adewale Itauna. Respectively from the Yoruba-Nigeria and Tupi Guarani-Brazil.
He started playing drum kit after being to a party where for the first time he heard and felt the power and deepness of the drums. He could not help, but buy a set of drums next day. Three years later he began an actor’s career where he would also use his music knowledge to perform as a musician as well as composing sound tracks for theatre plays.
Meanwhile working as an actor he took piano and percussion lessons, followed by a course at the University of Sao Paulo State where he finished a degree/BA on music-percussion.
Soon after he moved to London where he rapidly started working with many musicians and teaching percussion, Adriano went on studying again, this time a Master course in Music/Performance at SOAS – London.
His first band in the UK was called Sambura, which released one album: “Cru”. Performing in various festivals and venues, Adriano was introduced to Antonio Forcione(Acclaimed Italian guitarist) and soon became part of the Antonio Forcione Quartet which has been performing all over the world.
Other great collaborators he worked with include: Jonny Phillips, Seu Jorgea, Jonathan Preiss, Seb Rochford, Monica Vasconcelos, Andy Shaperd, Tuti Moreno, Rodolfo Stroeter, Modeste Hugues, Gustavo Marques, Netsayi Chigwendere, Julia Biel, Zoe Rahman, Steve Lodder and Ronu Majumdar.
Working on partnerships with artists, he created sound tracks for: the Portuguese fine artist Monica de Miranda, the English dance company Stacked wonky and a percussion based sound track for an animation movie based on the faiy tale “The little Red Riding Hood”.
He also shared the stage with Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe), Tcheka(Cape Verde) and supported Cesaria Evora, Airton Moreira and Flora Purim, Jools Holland, Seu Jorge, and Boubacar Traore.
Venues include : QEH, RFH, Barbican , Apollo, Usher Hall, Olimpia(Paris), Jazz Café, Ronnie Scott, SAGE.

Thanks so much for the Add–and your friendship. We enjoyed your music very much. Thanks for sharing it with all of us. It's a pleasure having you among our friends!
We've just added two new blogs about Umano, plus four more new compositions, making ten on our space. We hope you and your friends visit us and enjoy our music, too.
We wake up every morning and play the music of the new MySpace friends who have arrived at our site during the night. It occurred to us that these friends (you are among them) are almost universally positive, whether they be novices or legends, and without regard to their station in life or the country they occupy.
Although it's not an original thought, it also occurred to us that we couldn’t hold a verbal conversation with most of these friends, but we have bridged that gap by expressing our art honestly with each other.
We all have been filling the world with our music and art, in the hope that our messages of love and human understanding will have an impact on the world at large.
What a gift and what an opportunity we have received from this technology!
